Kate Bush - an amazing body of work.

The Man with the Child in his Eyes, written when she was just 13.

I hear him
Before I go to sleep
And focus on the day that's been
I realize he's there
When I turn the light off
And turn over
Nobody knows about my man
They think he's lost on some horizon
And suddenly I find myself listening
To a man I've never known before
Telling me about the sea
Oh his love is to eternity

Cloudbusting....

I still dream of orgonon
I wake up crying
You're making rain
And you're just in reach
When you and sleep escape me
You're like my yo-yo
That glowed in the dark
What made it special
Made it dangerous
So I bury it
And forget
But every time it rains
You're here in my head
Like the sun coming out
Ooh, I just know that something good is going to happen
And I don't know when
But just saying it could even make it happen

From Wiki...

Taking inspiration from the 1973 memoir A Book of Dreams,[2] the song is about the very close relationship between psychologist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter, told from the point of view of the mature Peter. It describes the boy's memories of his life with Reich on their family farm, called Orgonon, where the two spent time "cloudbusting", a rain-making process which involved using a machine designed and built by Reich – a machine called a cloudbuster – to point at the sky. The lyrics further describes the elder Reich's abrupt arrest and imprisonment, the pain of loss the young Peter felt, and his helplessness at being unable to protect his father. The song was inspired by Peter Reich's 1973 memoir, A Book of Dreams, which Bush read and found deeply moving.

Got a kiss from her, when she signed "The Kick inside" album at old HMV store on corner of Oxford Street, so for that she gets my vote

Mickey Jupp maye not have been born in Southend but at least he grew up there, which automatically makes him better than Kate Bush (much as I like her first album).

These are the lyrics to Mickey's most famous song ,which Feelgood did a great version of:-

CHEQUE BOOK.
By Mickey Jupp
Well my Mum and Papa told me they had some words to say
They said get out, I said I'm leaving anyway
I made some money playing this here guitar
Filled in a form and went and bought myself a car
I've got my cheque book baby
Got my bags all packed
If you're comin' with me get in the motor
Throw your suitcase in the back
Well I've been here for so long sick of this whole town
Ain't getting younger and it's time I got around
Gotta' go some places I ain't never been before
When I turn that corner mamma you won't see me no more
I've got my cheque book baby got my bags all packed
If you're comin' with me get in the motor
Throw your suitcase in the back
Well I've been here for so long sick of this whole town
Ain't getting younger and it's time I got around
I gotta' go some places I ain't never been before
When I turn that corner mamma you won't see me no more
I've got my cheque book baby got my bags all packed
If you're comin' with me get in the motor
Throw your suitcase in the back

Everyone's probably heard of Stephen Sondheim but not associated him with his lyrics. You know, musical theatre and that boring stuff. So, I'll kick off with one of my all time favourites - Losing my mind sung by Ruthie Henshall. Fabulously laid back, And I haven't even got started with West Side Story or A little Night Music or Into the Woods. That's all for later if Sonheim progresses. Come on, let your melodic inner self loose, you know you want to.

The sun comes up
I think about you
The coffee cup
I think about you
I want you so
It's like I'm losing my mind
The morning ends
I think about you
I talk to friends
I think about you
And do they know
It's like I'm losing my mind
All afternoon doing every little chore
The thought of you stays bright
Sometimes I stand in the middle of the floor
Not going left
Not going right
I dim the lights
And think about you
Spend sleepless nights
To think about you
You said you loved . . me
Or were you just being kind
(Musical interlude)
I want you so
it's like I'm losing my mind
(Musical interlude)
Does no one know
It's like I'm losing my mind
All afternoon…

The Red Shoes.

Oh she move like the Diva do
I said "I'd love to dance like you"
She said "just take off my red shoes
Put them on and your dream'll come true
With no words, with no song
You can dance the dream with your body on
And this curve, is your smile
And this cross, is your heart
And this line, is your path

And something very timely on 11/11

Our little army boy
Is coming home from B.F.P.O.
I've a bunch of purple flowers
To decorate to mammy's hero
Mourning in the aerodrome
The weather warmer, he is colder
Four men in uniform
To carry home my little soldier
But he didn't have the money for a guitar
(What could he do)
(Should have been a politician)
But he never had a proper education
(What could he do)
(Should have been a father)
But he never even made it to his twenties
What a waste
Army dreamers
Ooh, what a waste of
Army dreamers

Time to unleash a big hitter. From West Side Story -Something's coming. Bernstein's music was unforgettable but Sondheim's lyrics were brilliantly clever and a perfect match.

Could be!
Who knows?
There's something due any day;
I will know right away,
Soon as it shows.
It may come cannonballing down through the sky,
Gleam in its eye,
Bright as a rose!

Who knows?
It's only just out of reach,
Down the block, on a beach,
Under a tree.
I got a feeling there's a miracle due,
Gonna come true,
Coming to me!

Could it be? Yes, it could.
Something's coming, something good,
If I can wait!
Something's coming, I don't know what it is,
But it is
Gonna be great!

With a click, with a shock,
Phone'll jingle, door'll knock,
Open the latch!
Something's coming, don't know when, but it's soon;
Catch the moon,
One-handed catch!

Around the corner,
Or whistling down the river,
Come on, deliver
To me!
Will it be? Yes, it will.
Maybe just by holding still,
It'll be there!

Come on, something, come on in, don't be shy,
Meet a guy,
Pull up a chair!
The air is humming,
And something great is coming!
Who knows?
It's only just out of reach,
Down the block, on a beach,
Maybe tonight...

How Mickey Jupp never made it as a star is one of the mysteries of pop music. He was agreat singer and a great song writer. This is one of his cleverest lyrics:-

SWITCHBOARD SUSAN.
By Mickey Jupp
Switchboard Susan won't give me a line
I need a doctor get me 999
The first time I picked up my telephone
I fell in love with your ringing tone
I'm a long distance romancer
And I keep on trying until I get an answer
Give me! give me! one more chance
You're a great, little operator
Switchboard Susan let me off the hook
I've been this way since you just gave me a look
Switchboard Susan girl you're all the rage
Come on woman now let's get engaged
I'm a long distance romancer
And I keep on trying until I get an answer
Give me! give me! one more chance
You're a great, little operator
Now when I look at you girl I get an extension
And I don't mean on Alexander Graham Bell's invention
Switchboard Susan can we be friends
After six and at weekends
I'm a long distance romancer
And I keep on trying until I get an answer
Give me! give me! one more chance
You're a great, little operator

Mickey Jupp's lyrics compare favourably withanyone's in pop:-

SONGWRITER’S LAMENT
By Mickey Jupp
Bits of paper lying around, they all got some words written down
Nothing special, just a line or two, nothing different, nothing new
I got something I’m trying to say
But I’m having trouble, I can find no words today
I’m no Shakespeare, I’m no Keats, but I can make you tap your feets
Bring you a smile, I can make you feel blue, it takes a little longer than it used to do
I got something I’m trying to say
But I’m having trouble, I can find no words today
Some people think you pull ‘em out of a hat, but I am here to tell you it don’t work like that
Hard work and sleepless nights, that’s the only way to get your name up in lights
But I wish I was, I wish I was, I wish I was a dictionary
Yeah, dictionary – all them words
It takes weeks and months, not hours and days to say I love you in a million ways
And how it feels to have a broken heart - you sing of politics and call that art
I got something I’m trying to say
But I’m having trouble, I can find no words today
I got a deal, the money is good, but I’m not turning ‘em out like I should
I got my eyes on a Cadillac, but I got a publisher on my back
And I wish I was, I wish I was, I wish I was a dictionary
Yes I wish I was, I wish I was, I wish I was a dictionary

Correct, she was mis-quoted and only clarified the situation because it kept re-surfacing.

Her support was for having more women in higher positions in life and the celebration of this, but like anything, it's turned into a political agenda by those who choose to.

Bump for Stephen Sonheim. There is still time to vote for this lyrics genius and to help you all remember I give you America from West Side Story. It's worth another shout after @MK Shrimper's shameless attempt to rustle up Kate Bush votes from old time Zoners.

Lol, there has been no "rustling!"

BTW, West Side Story is my fave musical of all time - SS is excellent, but in my eyes, Kate Bush is on another level.

Blimey @MK Shrimper , I virtually was about to post the same thing.

Yep, WSS is the greatest musical ever made, but in this group of death there is only ever going to be one winner!
