I thoroughly detest the kind of stuff that Sammy Cahn peddled, so it's the Brothers Gibb for me.

Why? A hugely talented and accomplished wordsmith who understood things like rhyme, metaphor, pacing of a lyric etc., all civilised values to applaud, surely.

Roll back the years, everyone here whether on the floor or at a bar, has heard the intro of Saturday night fever and those hips move side to side and you have to control the urge to point the arm and finger at an angle

From hits written for the smooth Al Green to Dionne Warwick, these songs will hold the time

Heartbreaker by Dionne Warwick, Grease by Frankie Valli, Emotion by Samatha Sang/Destiny Child

There are more but I will wait till the next round

Middle-of-the-road crap, but that's just my opinion of course. His songs don't move me in any way, shape or form, and that's all I judge music on.

Smile an everlasting smile
A smile can bring you near to me
Don't ever let me find you gone
'Cause that would bring a tear to me
This world has lost it's glory
Let's start a brand new story
Now my love, right now
There'll be no other time
And I can show you how, my love
Talk in everlasting words
And dedicate them all to me
And I will give you all my life
I'm here if you should call to me
You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words, and words are all I have
To take your heart away
You think…

Great song written by The Gibbs

Cahn and Sinatra worked so well together.

Ya see a pair of laughing eyes,
And suddenly you're sighing sighs.
You're thinkin' nothin's wrong,
You string along, boy, then SNAP!
Those eyes, those sighs -
They're part of the tender trap.

You're hand in hand beneath the trees,
And soon there's music in the breeze.
You're actin' kind of smug
Until your heart just goes WHAP!
Those trees, that breeze -
They're part of the tender trap.

Some starry night,
When her kisses make you tingle,
She'll hold you tight
And you'll hate yourself for being single.

And all at once it seems so nice,
The folks are throwin' shoes and rice.
You hurry to a spot that's just a dot on the map.
You're hooked, you're cooked,
You're caught in the tender trap.

Some starry night,
When her kisses make you tingle,
She'll hold you tight
And you'll hate yourself for bein' single.

And all at once it seems so nice,
The folks are throwin' shoes and rice.
You hurry to a spot that's just a dot on the map.
And then you wonder how it all came about,
It's too late now, there's no gettin' out -
You fell in love, and love is the tender trap.

When somebody loves you, you feel it in your heart
When somebody loves you, you know it from the start
Every kiss becomes more than a kiss
Each look, each touch they mean so much
And that's when you discover how it feels to be a lover

When somebody loves you, it shows in every smile
When somebody loves you, your life becomes worthwhile
Always caring, always sharing everything you do
When somebody loves you like I love you

(When somebody loves you, it shows in every smile)
(When somebody loves you, your life becomes worthwhile)
Always caring, always sharing everything you do
When somebody loves you like I love you

Balmy breezes are blowing - each star in the sky is glowing
But I couldn't care less
Lovely night birds are winging - and filling the night with singing
But I couldn't care less

Oh how perfect the setting - but how do I start forgetting
I'm alone where we walked before
For without the warmth of your caress
It's a cold and dreary world - I guess

And I couldn't care less - unless
You could care once more

At the moment, even should JJ Cale come back from certain defeat he will be eliminated due to lack of evidence. @GROWLER, a few lines of lyrics please.

One of my favourite Bee Gees song, strangely written for a prisoner on death row, for his wife

The preacher talked to me and he smiled
Said, "Come and walk with me
Come and walk one more mile
Now for once in your life you're alone
But you ain't got a dime
There's no time for the phone"

I've just got to get a message to you
Hold on, hold on
One more hour and my life will be through
Hold on, hold on

I told him I'm in no hurry
But if I broke her heart
Then won't you tell her I'm sorry
And for once in my life I'm alone
And I've got to let her know just in time before I go

There's an amazing number of songs written about being on death row....I never realised it until Kev pointed it out for me.

Some of you may not have heard of J J Cale . In my opinion the US equivalent of our own Mickey Jupp .Wrote, played and sang his own lyrics.
Mickey a better singer but JJ a better musician(My opinion)

This is a lyrical competition but this mans music as well influenced not only Eric Clapton but also Mark Knopfler

This was the man that wrote

COCAINE

If you want to hang out, you've got to take her out, cocaine
If you want to get down, get down on the ground, cocaine
She don't lie,she don't lie,she don't lie,cocaine

If you got bad news, you want to kick them blues, cocaine
When your day is done and you got to run, cocaine
She don't lie,she don't lie,she don't lie,cocaine
If your thing is gone and you want to ride on,cocaine

Don't forget this fact,you can't get it back,cocaine
She don't lie,she don't lie.she don't lie,cocaine
She don't lie, she don't lie,she don't lie,cocaine

STAY AROUND

Stay around
Stay around girl
And let's make love
One more time

Stay around
Stay around girl
Ain't nothing like you
You're so fine

Let's slip away
Away into the night
Let's make love
Til it feels just right

Stay around
Stay around girl
And let's make love
One more time

A'int nowhere else
You've got to go
And neither do I
A'int nobody else
I want to know
I don't even try

Let's put it on
Let it cook a bit
Let's try it our
And see if it fits

Stay around
Stay around girl
And let's make love
One more time

Let's slip away
Away into the night
Let's make love
Til it feels just right.

Are we eliminated yet??

Try out After Midnight or Call Me The Breeze

But here is one you may not have seen or heard

HOMELESS

She said she had no money
But he was in doubt
He told her "I USED TO BE IN IT TO"
But now he was out
Spare some small change lady
And I'll be on my way
She looked into his eyes
And deep in his soul
I know she was wondering
If he was in control
She muttered to herself "Those beggars,Where do they come from"
He said "I'm not a homeless man
I'm a Gypsy by trade
And I'm travelling this land
I.m not a homeless man"

He moved through the streets
With his headband low
Never thinking he would never see
That woman again,you know
Just sleeping in the doorways

And alleys like he always had
The years rolled by
And later on
He spotted an old woman
All tattered and torn
Hard times had got her
Her clothes were ragged and old
She said " I'm not a homeless woman
I'm a Gypsy by trade
And I'm travelling this land
I'm not a homeless woman

Sometimes in the daytime
Sometimes at night
You will see a couple walking
They'll come into sight
Pushing their carts
And holding hands
If you ask to help
They'll just run away
Like little children,out to play
And if you ask " Who are you"
They'll always say
"I'm not a homeless man
I'm a Gypsy by trade by trade

I dare you to listen and not be moved

He who was a rocker, blues man, balladeer

A man of the people and very private
