There are only a few teams we have played more often than Bristol Rovers in the League over the years and, despite our recent efforts, we are currently 41 wins to the good over their 39 with 26 draws.

Tomorrow’s referee is another of the young, first year referees and this will be his first Southend match and his first Bristol Rovers match. It will be James Oldham from Derby and he has only refereed 12 matches as a Football League referee, predominantly League Two. These seem to have gone reasonably well and he was given the televised Cup match between Dulwich Hamlet and Carlisle.

These 12 matches have seen a slightly above average 41 yellow and 3 red cards, two of the reds coming after the final whistle of his last game and both to ex-Southend players: Matty Lund of Scunthorpe and Dave Worrall from Port Vale.

He will be assisted by another Southend debutant, Hristo Karaivanov not from Bulgaria, but Sutton-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire. The other Assistant is Marvyn Amphlett from Worcester (who was reserve official for our Wembley match against Crewe). Fourth Official will be high-flying official Steven Plane also from Worcester.
