Nigel Clough talks to Burton Albion OS before the game against Southend United

Clough targets six points from home game double header

Nigel Clough OS.jpg
Nigel Clough Burton Albion’s Manager

Nigel Clough is targeting six points from two home games this week as he looks for a push towards the top six.

The Brewers play Southend tomorrow (7.45pm kick off) and Lincoln on Saturday (3pm kick off) and the Albion manager is looking to make home advantage count as his team plays catch up.

Albion have played only six home games so far this campaign – the least in the league - but now have four between tomorrow and Boxing Day.

Clough said: “If we can get six points from these two games we will be in the top half of the league. We have two games in hand, one of them is tomorrow, so let’s make it count.”

Southend are in the relegation zone, but Clough says the Brewers won’t be underestimating them.

He said: “Southend will be fresh this week and although they have been struggling, they are showing signs of improvement. We will be taking nothing for granted. League position goes out of the window in our division and everyone is capable of beating everyone else.

“Sol Campbell is starting to imprint his style on the team, and they are capable of scoring goals.”

Clough’s biggest worry is the niggling injuries in the squad and how much three away games on the bounce have taken out of his players.

He said: “We hope our lads can recover in time and we can get those points.

“We got Reece Hutchinson back on the pitch at Oldham which gives us options down the left-hand side.

“And the good thing, but frustrating thing, is that all the injuries are only a week or two – Oliver Sarkic, John Brayford, Nathan Broadhead.

“Oliver hasn’t played this many games with this intensity so we have to look after him, so he doesn’t burn out.

“It was good to give Richard Nartey a rest at Oldham and Scotty Fraser for 70 minutes so hopefully they should be available

“Nathan Broadhead is 50-50 but with the Christmas period coming up if his hamstring goes he’s out for the whole period so we have to be careful of that

“The next couple of months will tell us where we are going to be, so we want as many players as possible fit.”

Sol Campbell Southend United’s new Manager talks to OS before travelling to Burton Albion

Sol Campbell OS.jpg
Sol Campbell Southend United’s Manager

Sol Campbell took to his press duties on Monday afternoon as he prepares to take on Nigel Clough’s side on Tuesday night.

On facing Burton Albion...

Burton are a great passing team; they hold the ball well they look for the crosses and they look to get in behind teams.

We’ve just got to make sure that we concentrate on the switch balls and the balls they try and get into the box. We’ve got to be ready for that kind of play, their quick free kicks are also something we have to watch out for.

So we’ve got to look out for a few things but we as a team have got to be bright and make sure we’re on top of our game and start the match well.

EK3diXuX0AEFiAv.jpg

On the benefits a break from football has had on the team...

We had an internal game between the lads on Friday and Saturday, which was good for us and we looked at what we’ve got.

We involved some of the U23’s which was nice as we could look at a variety of players that we have.

We played three sets of 25 minutes at Roots Hall, so it was good for the lads to play on an actual pitch.

We got some of the guys who are coming back from injuries involved as we wanted them to get some more playing time on a bigger pitch, that was good because we could look at the different range of players at our disposal, and we got a lot out of the training sessions.

We’re all excited to get back into action, we’ve had the time off and had some good training sessions.

We’ve been looking at certain aspects of our game that we want to improve on, and we want to keep doing the right things, look at the fine details and most importantly cut out the little mistakes that we keep on making.

Football is all about taking advantage of the little mistakes and being able to do the right things when you get your chances and hopefully, we can start to play like that.

Team News...

Sam Mantom is back fit, and we’ve had a look at him and that was good to see. He’s probably one of those players who I am looking at using tomorrow.

Stephen Humphrys is ready but I don’t think he will be starting this soon, but he is another one that should be in and around the squad.

It was good to see Jason Demetriou back out there as well.

Ethan Hamilton has a slight groin injury and we don’t want to risk him in any way that could make it worse.

John White is still unavailable and so is Charlie Kelman.

Sol Campbell wants 'bright' display from Southend United at Burton Albion

PA-47885002.jpg.gallery.jpg
Wanting a bright display - Southend United manager Sol Campbell

Sol Campbell feels Southend United will have to be ‘bright’ if they are to win at Burton Albion tonight.

The Shrimpers have gone nine League games without a win.

But Campbell - who has yet to win with Blues in the League - feels his side will have to be at their best to see off the Brewers.

“Burton are a great passing team who like to go behind and get crosses in, like most teams really in this League,” said Campbell.

“We have to make sure we’re concentrating on switched balls and balls into the box.

“We have to be ready for that and the quick free-kicks too.

“They’re a bright team from corners and things like that so we have to make sure we’re bright too and at the top of our game.

“But we have to make sure we start well too, I think that’s going to be important for us.”

The Big Preview

Burton Albion vs Southend United

Burton Albion Big Preview.jpg
Overview

Southend United return to action following a 10-day break as they travel to the Pirelli Stadium to take on Burton Albion this evening in League One.

Blues had a weekend off last weekend following their early exit from the Emirates FA Cup, while Burton ground out a 1-0 win at Oldham on Saturday to make it into the Third Round.

Sol Campbell’s side, therefore, should be the fresher of the two going into tonight’s contest which had been rearranged from mid-November due to Burton’s international call ups.

Form

Blues’ well documented poor form showed no sign of abating last time out as the free-scoring Oxford United handed Southend a 4-0 defeat at Roots Hall.

Defeat by the Yellows extended Southend’s winless run in the league to nine matches with that victory over MK Dons back in September Blues’ sole win in the league so far this season.

Ignoring Burton’s cup exploits, last time out in the league they recorded a fantastic 2-1 win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light which ended a run of three league games without a win.

Last Meeting

Monday 22nd April 2019

Southend United 3-2 Burton Albion

Mantom 18’, Bunn 48’, Dieng 77’; Brayford 60’, Harness 86’

Southend grabbed a vital three points in their fight for survival as they put in a gutsy performance to beat Burton Albion 3-2 at Roots Hall with Timothee Dieng’s header proving to be the winner.

The Frenchman nodded Blues 3-1 in front with 13 minutes remaining. Marcus Harness scored late to make for a nervy finish, but Southend managed to hold on for their first win in three months.

Blues Team News

Sam Mantom looks set to make a return to the Blues squad, potentially even the starting line-up, as the midfielder returns from a two-month lay-off with a hamstring injury.

Stephen Humphrys is another who’s in line for a place in Campbell’s squad having missed the last five games with a thigh injury, bolstering Blues’ attacking options.

Ethan Hamilton is likely though to miss out with a slight groin problem, while longer-term absentees Charlie Kelman and John White remain unavailable.

Burton Dangerman

Northern Ireland international Liam Boyce is arguably the one for Blues fans to look out for this evening with the 28-year-old striker having scored in his last two for The Brewers.

The experienced frontman scored the winner in last weekend’s Emirates FA Cup tie away at Oldham, four days removed from scoring the winner at Sunderland in a 2-1 win.

Boyce scored the opener for Burton when these sides met at the Pirelli Stadium in October 2018 and he’ll be looking to score in three consecutive matches for the first time since April/May 2017.

Ref Watch

Darren Drysdale will take charge of Blues for the second time this season, being assisted by Lisa Rashid and Conor Brown, while Wade Smith fills in as the fourth official.

Drysdale was the man in the middle for Southend’s 4-3 defeat at Wycombe earlier this season and, last time out, he took charge of Tranmere’s Emirates FA Cup win over non-league Chichester City.

So far this campaign, Drysdale has taken charge of 20 matches across League One and Two as well as cup competitions, showing 72 yellow cards and one red.

Away Fans Guide

Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium is quite small in stature to some of the grounds in League One but meets the needs of The Brewers who only moved into the ground in 2005.

Made up of three terraced stands and one all-seater stand, those Blues fans making the journey tomorrow will find themselves housed in the corner of the main stand to the right of the dugouts.

For more information on the ground, including info on travel directions, where to park and where to go for a pre-match drink, check out awaygames.co.uk’s guide by clicking here.

Come On You Blues!

Interesting line up, not sure what to make of it.

Mark Milligan is suspended for tonight's game

Four changes for Southend United Sam Mantom and Jason Demetriou return, surprised Humphrys, Cox, and Taylor on bench.

So, a rest for Mr Cox tonight, saving him for Saturday, perhaps, or has he reached less games status?

John Joe O’Toole, not scored for Burton. Banker to score tonight!

If Demetriou shows anything like his form against Scotland, we should see some decent crosses for Hopper and/or Goodship to capitalise on.

I'm shocked young Bish get's the call again after letting in some terrible goals by bad positioning or slow reactions. I know that will upset a few of you, but we're deep in a relegation battle. It's not time for sentiment. We desperately need points. I always feel we need to score 3 or more with Bish in goal.

4-4-1-1? With Hutch behind Hopper?

Think it'll be the 4-3-3 formation we ended the Oxford game.

...............................................Bishop
Bwomono........... Kiernan............ Dieng.......... Ralph
...........Demetriou.... Hutchinson.. Mantom
McLaughlin........................................................Goodship
.............................................Hopper

Mantom and Demetriou coming in for Cox (who'd dropped into midfield) and the suspended Milligan

I am optimistically going for a 1-1 draw with Humphrys coming on off the bench for the equaliser.

John Joe O’Toole, not scored for Burton. Banker to score tonight!

He has been playing at center back for them that's why. Couldn't believe it when I saw it. Been playing there for a while. But yes, he will score!

I think Sol has already earmarked Oxley as one he will be looking to release.
