When I think of Southend v Bury matches, I tend to think of turgid 0-0 draws after the three we had in quick succession in the 70s. Even since then, there have been few goals about in these matches with the last 14 such matches producing a miserly 23 goals (6 of which came in one match).

The man in charge tomorrow is Lee Collins from Surrey. He has been fast tracked through the system and rose to the level of League referee remarkably quickly, this being his third season.

He started his career off with 6 red cards in his first 11 matches, then calmed down a lot but then went a bit mad again last season.

He has now settled at a well below average card rate with just 2 reds and 50 yellows from 23 games. He has only had one Championship match early this season and made a hash of a red card and hasn't been given another one since.

His last Southend match was our wretched performance at Newport this season where he was comfortably more competent than the players. Atkinson's yellow was the only card of the match.

His last Southend home match was the League Cup defeat by Yeovil. A yellow for Prosser and four of theirs.

On his previous visit to Roots Hall he killed the game for Dagenham with a unjustifiable red card after 8 minutes (which was subsequently rescinded). A further yellow for Phillips and a comfortable 3-1 win thanks to two goals from Britt.

He has refereed Southend on two other occasions before that. More recently, Oxford away at the end of the season before last (one caution for us, two for them) and before that at, co-incidentally, Dagenham in the 3-2 League win when he cautioned Mohsni and again two of theirs. He didn't attract much comment, adverse or otherwise.

For those looking for positive omens, his last visit to Roots Hall was to act as 4th Official in the Chesterfield match back in mid January. Our last win.

Assistants will be ex-Ukranian top flight referee, Ole Saliy now from London and Geoff Russell from Northampton. Stuart Butler from Maidstone is 4th Official.

I always think of our game in the 1990/91 season. No, not THAT one at Gigg Lane alas, but the home game in the autumn, which was the only Southend game I saw that entire scampaign! 2-1 win that day, same again tomorrow would be appreciated.

I make that 3 league wins and 1 does'nt Matter Cup defeat out of 4 since this ref started. Not a bad record. The omens look good................can't believe I went to all 3 league games.

Yes, if you conveniently forget the Newport game, which, all things considered, really is the best thing to do with it.
