According to BBC Essex a deal is 'close' to being done with him coming on loan and then permanently in january. Rotherham manager has confirmed it.

Massive credit to Tilly/Brush/Ron for pulling this one off, it's no understatement to say that this is a major coup for Southend United and, should the deal be made permanent, Campbell-Ryce is another player (along with Cole/Eastwood) who as youngsters have the potential to not only be big assets on the pitch while they are here but also to earn the club sizeable fees when they move on.

Yes we do need JCR - what happens if either Cole/Gower get injured or suspended? We have a wealth of quality midfielders at this club but only two are effective out wide attacking-wise (Petts, Guttridge, Benno and Jay are NOT wingers) and the chances of Cole and Gower (in particular) going a full season without injury or suspension are virtually non-existent. JCR has the ability to play on both flanks and also up front so his versatility will be essential to the side. I would expect him to start from the bench but quite frankly if he shows anything like the ability we all know he has I don't expect it will be long before he displaces either Cole/Gower from the starting X1. The competition for places is also vital - Gower and Cole will know they can't afford to rest on their laurels with JCR waiting in the wings.

Another factor is his pace, I would imagine at some stage (particularly with Gower's fitness record) Cole will be left-side with JCR on the right - think of the options we'll have on the counter-attack with that sort of pace, this option could be vital away from home in games where we would look to hit on the break.

Just as an interesting and strange sidenote, Rotherham have taken Darren Campbell, who obviously was with us recently, on trial. He's a right winger, Campbell-Ryce is a right winger. 2 and 2 possible equaling 4 for a change!?
