Car help

My car (VW Golf) has just got to it's service mileage. It's not due its (first) MOT for another couple of months. Do I take it now for a service (major one = pricey) and then for its MOT in a few months, or hold out and get it done altogether which might save me a little and is more convenient. I've checked the oil and levels and all looks fine.

Do the lot in one hit, quite a few garages will do you a deal on both at the same time. Also, avoid taking it to a main dealer who will just charge you 30% more than anyone else. Try and find yourself a VW specialist as most of the people who work there will have been main dealer tech's at some point and will have all the right kit plus won't pull your pants down quite as far.

VW dealer price to fix air conditioning = £1000

Local garage price plus oil and filter change = £350

Guess which one I went for?

Yeah I've got a local vw specialist next door to my work which is handy. Ok I'll hold on a couple of months and get it all done together

why are you due a major service if you car is on its 3rd year? what is your service schedule? I work at a dealership not VW but a 3rd year service is normally a basic one. generally oil and filter change not a full.

its up to you if you book it altogether does make it easier.

Has your service light come on yet? servicing is recommended but also depend on warranty. id check you warranty as all warranty is different some over you for longer then 1st 3 years.

it's a longlife service interval i don't really get it but apparently i'm due a full one

I had a diesel golf previously. For one service I was told the cam belt needed changing. The dealership wanted to charge me £400. I told them not to bother and that I would get it done privately. They then rang me back and offered me a 10% discount, which I also refused.

I took the car to my mechanic who did the job for £250, but messed it up (according to VW he had put the cam belt back two teeth out). VW fixed it for £80, which my mechanic paid. Even if my mechanic hadn't paid it, it would still have been cheaper to go to him, get it messed up, and then have it fixed by VW.

just coz i work a dealership dont mean im going to sting any one up i work in a team that makes sure the schedule is correct and check the servicing needed in case service desk tell customer the wrong one or to much money.

cam belts only need changing at certain mileage and most of the time the car would have done about 100k plus for the schedule to advise cam-belt change.

hope you get it sorted.

For the MOT I think you can get it done up to a month before it expires, the garage just forward dates the expiry date (hence 13 months MOT).

sorry Genial Harry Grout just a bit touchy about my job as so many people would say that and not joking x

yes MOT can be done 30 days before its expiry and post dated.
