Car Problems?

Today, I was driving my Escort at about 30Mph - everything seeming fine....got to a 70Mph road and started to increase speed...

Got into fourth gear and started noticing a problem - the car was going about 45Mph, the engine sounded like it was reving (as if my foot was right down on the accelerator) but the car wasn't picking up speed...I then tried in fith gear and same again - car was revving but car wasn't increasing in speed???

Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this?

Yup, sounds like a dodgy clutch there, might be engaging under normal driving conditions which severly hampers your acceleration despite the engine gaining in revs...

You'll probably need to take the car to a garage to get it fixed.... and risk the sky-high labour prices!

thanks for the advice guys - had a feeling it was the clutch - let's just hope it isn't too expensive

Fingers crossed it's not clutch. But you say your right foot wasn't giving the pedal some at the time and if this didn't happen when you were changing gears you may just be lucky, it could just be the throttle cable jamming open from time to time. I also find it strange that you've only noticed this in top gears rather than low ones.

yep mucho revs with sod all accelaration sounds like the clutch is on its way out.

Sounds like clutch to me.

Have you recently topped your oil up, sometimes overfilling the oil can cause clutch slip (But I am not sure if that applies to newer cars )

Sounds like clutch to me as well.

Mind you, thats 'cos everyone has said that as well.

If I ever feel like my car is going too slowly I read my speed from the kilometers per hour scale on the speedometer rather than the miles per hour scale.

Out of interest, what is the Mad Cyril motor of choice?

Just an update

It turned out my clutch has gone - a £320 job and the car has only got 55000 miles on it!!!!....not happy - seems like a few people on here could be mechanics.

I give you the Audi 100 Avant.

Less of a car, more of a cruise liner on wheels.

I have completely gutted my house this year and this car has been worth its weight in gold for trips to the tip and picking up building supplies.

Unfortunately it was too big a target for Welsh police to miss when driving to our last LDV vans final at the Millenium stadium.

It also drinks a LOT of petrol so I drive my wifes car a lot of the time.
