Hi folks,

Just in need of a little advice. There's been a couple of cars knicked from around where we live, and the Uni itself recently - And last night as I was slowly driving out of our small residential area, two ***** ran up, punched in my back window, tried to punch in my sunroof window, and tried to open my drivers door to get entry (luckily my drivers door handle is broken, so they couldn't get in). Came out of nowhere really, and I was quite shocked by it. Once I heard the smash I obviously stepped on the accelerator and drove off (this was at 2am, not a soul around to see what happened).

We live across the street from the Uni nightclub, and until we leave this apartment in May, I'm always a bit wary of some drunken **** coming around and trying to break into some of the cars on our street. Was thinking of getting either a steering wheel lock, or one of those locks that goes around the handbrake and gear stick. Which one would be more secure? I heard one was easier to break through than the other...

The car is only an old 1997 Peugeot 106, and I can't really afford to put an alarm system or anything like that on her.

Thanks for your help.

F***king di**kless S**ts.

That is an awful experience to go through mate.

I do not know about the 2 security aids you have mentioned, but for me the immobilizer is the best thing.

Trouble is the ****z will wreck the car if they feel like doing so. All i can suggest is try to park it somewhere away from the area.

I vaguely remember a Watchdog programme or something where those security locks were ripped off in seconds by those in the know. As Dave says, Immobolizer.

Why oh why are people so stupid, maybe you should have slammed it in reverse and flatterned them.
Had a simular thing 3 years ago when some c ocks went round throwing bricks thru car windows, did 60 odd cars(or is that even).
Here we never lock the cars unless we are in the big city and always leave the keys in the ingnition.
Tip----cheapest way is to remove say the coil starter thingy fuse, bit of a ker fuffle but at least they cant start it but as AS said they will no doubt smash it up.
Ask your futre wife what they do to cars on new years here in france.

Thanks very much for your replies chaps.

I would imagine getting an immobolizer fitted would be pretty expensive, and not worth my while for a car worth less than 500 euro. If I got a car alarm fitted, is it possible to then remove it if i got another car or again not worth the hassle?

I may even just go and pay in weekly for a newer car fitted with alarm etc. at this rate.

I'd say go for a crook lock then, but do a bit of research as I say some are a waste of time.

Really sorry to hear about that Ant, horrible thing to go through. Have the police given any indication to residents that they're doing anything about it?

The cheapest quickest easiest thing is disconnect one of the battery leads.

Takes 20 seconds to take on/off and most scumbags could not be arsed to check.

Nope. Sometimes there is a squad car outside the nightclub at 2am, more often than not though there is none. They are very under resourced it seems.

Myself and Charlotte have found a nice new house away from all this bollocks, so the quicker May comes the better.

atleast you are ok Ant....must have **** you up as i would of been in the same situ.

There is a Thatcham Cat 3 steering lock available which you might want to consider. Its only about £35. If nothing else it may mean these muppets choose a different car to abuse rather than yours.

I have used steering locks on my escort and while they arent great, they are perhaps better than nothing. As you say it prob isnt worth spending a great deal on the car anyway.

A car can be replaced.....you cant, so priority must always go to your own (and your good ladys) welbeing.

The best lock-y thing is the one that completely covers the steering wheel. They have ball-bearings in them so even if you turn the lock, the actual steering wheel stays still. The bar-type can be beaten by literally sawing the portion of the steering wheel off!

That's correct, these are the best steering locks on the market but as Grays Blue suggested, disconnect the negative lead from the battery, last thing the average car thief checks. 10mm spanner and takes 2 minutes.
