I know a bloke whose hobby is lockpicking. He has a job which involves a lot of waiting around, and sits and fiddles with padlocks and the like. It is possible (apparently) to buy online master keys which will open various brands of cars, and other tricks that will get you into most basic locks in seconds. Some bigger locks are harder to open as they contain multiple tumblers, but according to him, most padlocks are for show only, and an experienced lockpick would spring them in seconds. Depressing stuff unfortunately, thankfully he's honest.

I'm told that they may also have jammed your locking device, meaning they didn't even need to break into it. Sometimes Andy, it's best to just let things go and move on.
