Cavaghn Miley Signs

We never really replaced Timlin, in fact in L1 we had really poor recruitment in midfield which set us back massively and our decline can be traced back to releasing players and not improving the squad despite spending more money

Timlins release was ridiculous, sure we all had a moan up when Phil kept playing him at left back which he wasn't the best at but we missed that drive and foot going in during games. Moat successful teams have an enforcer, not usually the most gifted of players technically but break up the play and let's the others do the business, recent examples would be like Keane, Fernandinho and Kante.

Our midfield has had a soft underbelly for too long and it's a contributing factor to where we find ourselves now.

Ron Martin said at the time that CP could not handle strong characters in the dressing room and that was the reason Timlin and Wandsworth were released.
Trouble is CP replace them with players who were not upto the job and were poor replacements for Tims and Wandsworth..

I agree, Ive always felt the beginning of the decline was letting Timlin go and not being replaced, resulting in a spineless team lacking fighting spirit ! Neal provided what ferguson Dunne and Atkinson couldn't , although Atkinson improved for a good spell ! Is what every team needs the water carrier type of player , Deschamps for France and Chelsea is maybe an example.

When did they play for us?

Never forgot Timlins passion and eagerness against Stevenage in his head brace, in the play off semi, true gritty midfielder, but Leonard was sorely missed when he left!

Gary Deegan, despite what some on here thought, was also extremely effective in this role.
The problem with him was -not the way he wore his shorts- too many red (and yellow) cards. He was actually better at passing than Timlin.
