I watched up until about 11.00 (well done the NoTW for priniting the f**kin list before the programme had even aired
mad.gif
) so there were no surprises for me.

I was paricularly impressed with :-

Nick Drake
Jeff Buckley
Patti Smith
Love

Being in the top 100. Apart from that it was fairly obvious.

Surely if you intended to watch it you could have not just read the offending article? I read it and was so apathetic about tuning in I watched the Baftas and theres something about mary instead

Ridiculous not to have any of the three bands you and I mention - three of the best British bands of the last 25 years - but to have Dido there. I'm still gobsmacked.

wow.gif

OK, time to start a list of albums we'd rather see in the top 100 instead of bloody Dido.  I'll open the bidding with any of the following:

The Cure - Head on the Door
Roni Size & Reprazent - New Forms
Faithless - Reverence
U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
Jamiroquai - Emergency on Planet Earth
Sting - The Soul Cages
The Levellers - Levelling the Land
Portishead - Dummy
Everything But The Girl - Walking Wounded
AC/DC - Back in Black

Yours, still in complete disbelief that Dido made the Top 100 whilst none of the above albums did,

Matt
Personally I'd say Sting (as a solo artist) and Everything but the Girl are as bad as Dido.

Good call on Roni Size though, New Forms is a top album and Brown Paper Bag is an all time tune.

In fact there seems to be a distinct rock/pop bias with a lot of genres not being properly recognised. There's very little proper dance music and no drum 'n' bass whatsoever and I'd definitely have Goldie's materpiece 'Timeless' in a top 10 let alone a top 100. Jazz is more or less ignored apart from Coltrane's Love Supreme - surely Miles Davis' Kind of Blue should be included. Soul and blues are also under represented - where's the likes of James Brown's Live at the Apollo or Otis Redding's Otis Blue? There's just a single rap record, down at 93 - where's 'Straight outta Compton'?

And then what is Madonna doing at 8, when Pet Sounds is languishing down at 33 or London Calling at 44?

ps Definitely Achtung Baby ahead of Unforgettable Fire

Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
New Order - Technique
Manics - Holy Bible

and a quick count reveals I have 30 of the 100.....................

Efil4zaggin was better than straight outta compton any. Other good rap albums include EPMD- Unfinished Business; Ice Cube Amerikkka's Most wanted, Quest's A Low End Theory.

jazz- I agree Miles should be there, and possibly Herbie Hancock...as for soul- Otis, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield...

Bang out of order that, but then it's coming from you so what should I expect. At least Soul Cages is an album about something, rather than pop-rock by numbers a la Dido.

As for Jazz, I'd have Brubeck's Time Further Out.

Hmm, a low-ish 23 out of 100.  A few too many "greatest hits" in my collection, perhaps...

oops.gif

Just counted that I own 21 & need to buy 3. I'd have thought I'd have owned more than that but then again I guess it summarises how specific my musical taste is. The missus probably has another 5 or 6 in her grubby paws on that list too (Dido included I'm afraid) but she's only allowed to listen to them when I'm not around.

For what it's worth, my selection to throw into the ring for consideration :-

The Man Who - Travis
InSides -Orbital
Agateis Byrjun - Sigur Ros
Marquee Moon - Television
Violator - Depeche Mode
Turn On The Bright Lights - Interpol

Good point well made, the sequence of events was as follows though:-

Very hungover on Sunday morning I get to the list and have a quick scan of it noting the top ten in particular. My eye catches something else and I read that before turning the page.

Later on Channel four I see an advert for the program (I didn't know it was on prior to seeing the advert) and realise that the list I had previously seen related to it.

My point is, I was caught out and probably many others were to. Was it completely necessary of the NoTW to print the list prior to airing the program.

Nah, he's musical watercolours... occasionally brilliant and fresh, but can fade with time.

I've got 9 out of the list which I'm quite surprised with.

Good shout about Travis - The Man Who.

Yeah, Rearviewmirror is- cos Sony wanted to fill it with all their singles. It's not a studio album.
Vitalogy and Ten should both be in there.
