The Chelsea keeper appeared to go down injured deep into extra-time and Sarri called Willy Caballero off the bench to come on for the impending penalty shootout in the Carabao Cup today. .
Kepa gestured to the bench that he was okay to continue but Sarri wanted to make the change anyway.
However, he refused to come off in stunning scenes that were aired live and his manager was left seething on the touchline.
He may well have been considering the switch anyway as Caballero was seen warming up before the incident and is a proven penalty specialist.
However, the decision was taken out of his hands by the player who will now surely be disciplined. Sarri had to be held back by Rudiger.
Kepa did save a Leroy Sane effort in the shootout but should probably have done better when Sergio Aguero’s effort squirmed under him.

I can't ever remember a player flatly refusing to come off. I've seen hundreds not happy about being substituted, but they always come off. Caballero is considered a better penalty saver as well, and he knows the Man City players having played there 2014-17. I think it was disgraceful not to come off and showed a total lack of respect and selfish to the extreme.
Sarri now bailing out his goalkeeper by saying it was a misunderstanding, Lol, probably trying to help stop disciplinary action and maybe get a few more players on his side as he's fallen out with half of them.

Typical Chelsea, their players have run the club for years. The likes of Terry, Lampard and Drogba were the worst for it. Horrible club and it’s hilarious because it’s them.

Yeah, the last 10 years they have been plagued by player power. This is just another example. The way they half tried in losing 6-0 to Man City two weeks ago, some suggesting the players wanted Sarri out. The meetings some of the older players had behind previous Managers back.

Can't see how Sarri can stay on as manager although he will be sacked anyway. He has been completely humiliated in front of the watching millions and his authority has been shot to bits

Sarri should have been sacked weeks ago, who sets up to win a cup final with no forwards?

They didn't play with no forwards, Hazard was played up front. Chelsea beat Man City 2-0 in the premier league back in December with the same tactic.

Are you joking?? Do you remember the result against Man City a few weeks back. Chelsea don't have the players City have and if they had gone out to attack them again they would have been punished. Sarri may have fallen short recently but yesterdays tactics were spot on, they contained City and didn't give them a sniff. Not many people gave Chelsea a chance and they came very close to winning it. I reckon if you'd have offered penalties to Chelsea fans before the game most would have bitten your hand off.

Agree with you a lot, but not on this.

The problem with the club is above the management, as long as the managers don't get backed by the board the players will do as they please. It's not a problem unique to Chelsea, I think you have seen it at Man Utd in recent years. Look at the top three Pep, Klopp and Poch. All of them have the full backing of their board and you couldn't imagine players stepping out of line and not being dealt with/ moved on.

worlds most expensive goalkeeper vs an underachieving manager, this is only going one way.....

It's a vicious circle.

Would Sarri be underachieving if the players were behind him? He went 12 games unbeaten at the beginning of the season and had a great record at Napoli. He's not a bad manager, Imagine if he had the support from above that Klopp, Poch and Pep have. I'd imagine any of those 3 would be supported above any player on their team. Kepa has a 7 yr contract, Chelsea hold all the cards and could easily put him in his place if they wanted to. They won't though because it is Chelsea.

Sarri should stand his ground, get himself sacked, take the money and go to Roma.

Yes, and that's why he's come out with this misunderstanding nonsense. How did Kepa know that they only wanted him off because of his injury? It was the injury plus the back up goalie is a better penalty saver and knows the City penalty takers well having played there. So whether you think you should come off or not, if the Manager and assistant Manager are calling you off, and doing their nut, you go off. Embarrassing.

So Kepa is fined a weeks wages and has apologised to Sarri, to Zola, to the goalkeeper waiting to come on, the players, the club and the supporters. Just a misunderstanding tho, Lol.
