The Chelsea keeper appeared to go down injured deep into extra-time and Sarri called Willy Caballero off the bench to come on for the impending penalty shootout in the Carabao Cup today. .
Kepa gestured to the bench that he was okay to continue but Sarri wanted to make the change anyway.
However, he refused to come off in stunning scenes that were aired live and his manager was left seething on the touchline.
He may well have been considering the switch anyway as Caballero was seen warming up before the incident and is a proven penalty specialist.
However, the decision was taken out of his hands by the player who will now surely be disciplined. Sarri had to be held back by Rudiger.
Kepa did save a Leroy Sane effort in the shootout but should probably have done better when Sergio Aguero’s effort squirmed under him.
I can't ever remember a player flatly refusing to come off. I've seen hundreds not happy about being substituted, but they always come off. Caballero is considered a better penalty saver as well, and he knows the Man City players having played there 2014-17. I think it was disgraceful not to come off and showed a total lack of respect and selfish to the extreme.
Sarri now bailing out his goalkeeper by saying it was a misunderstanding, Lol, probably trying to help stop disciplinary action and maybe get a few more players on his side as he's fallen out with half of them.
