Post-Match Thread and Ratings Cheltenham Town 1-0 Southend Utd

Having listened to MM after the game, he said we matched them, rubbish they looked like they wanted to score and win the game we on the other hand play defensive as we have now for a few games, I dont think MM knows how to win games the best form of defending is to attack,
one point a game from now on will see us relegated, sorry MM you are out of your depth, before anybody starts with stupid comments thats my opinion, having supported this team for over 60 years.

We certainly did match them.Neither keeper had much to do-it was a game with very little threat on either goal and we were unlucky to lose to a dubious penalty. We had no capable and fully fit forwards available—he wouldn’t play Acquah if there was an alternative. The only way we might have avoided relegation comfortably was if Ranger had been able to play regularly.
MM is definitely one of our better managers and I’ve been supporting the Blues longer than you.

I think overall we played well. Its unfortunate we had to make 6 changes - as I have said many times its more sensible to rotate 2-3 game to game rather than pick the same players again and again and then make wholesale changes (i.e. 6). That said we have a fixed way of playing that players know their roles and swap in and out of.

Their is a bit of a blindspot on playing people in specialist positions. It seems MM thinks if you play in the back 4 you must be able to play RB as easily as CB? SH has been a very good CB and has a great partnership with JW. He is nor a RB- even close. And there is no way, for a second, he is a better RB than Demi. And before anyone says oh Demi has lost some pace I would back him in a foot race with SH, and it is, of course as much about positioning anyway. Its a mistake now made more than once which makes it disappointing. In trying to understand alas, as with the back 5 debacles, whether it was a case of how can I play Cordner (who by the way played well).

No problem with Halford as DM. Played there at Championship level regularly enough.

So MM gets pluses for the organisation and how we are no competing against anyone in this league. And a minus for repeating previous mistakes. The former is a plus for all remaining game, the latter hopefully not to be made once more...

The penalty there should never had been a decision to make. Once SH was behind the player he should have just let him go. JW had come across to cover so all he was going to be able to do is pull the ball back- and I would have bet we would have dealt with it.

So having a different opinion to yourself and calling you out on saying the manager is out of his depth without saying why is classified as “stupid” to you?

Acquah frustrates the hell out of me, he's a forward who can't jump and merely tries to rely on his height to win headers. He's not that quick either - another reason those long balls didn't work. Also didn't seem to try to get on Halford's long throws.

Acquah - 6, jump man, jump!

I'm not slagging him off, but he really frustrates me - he never jumps for the ball, it's like he's got lead weights in his boots!

Can we put this one to bed now, 50 secs in, I believe that is Acquah leaping like a salmon to get on the end of a cross,...

could step in to play that role (albeit less effectively).

With Elvis, now that JD has been converted into a central midfielder and Halford is viewed as a utility man, there's the inexperienced option of Rob Howard or Reiss Chandler (which we've seen with Seaden not being entrusted long-term with the gloves is unlikely to be MM's favoured choice), or the option of playing a centre-back in Hobson out of position, where he doesn't look anywhere near as comfortable.
Olayinka can also play right back and I believe one of the reasons he was brought in originally was his ability to cover there.

What about the dozen or so other times every match where he doesn't jump? One instance proves nothing. If he wants to help, then Nile can do some mentoring there.

If we did win at Odiham, it wouldn’t be that great. They play in the Basingstoke and District League Division 3.
I used to be based there, very posh area, maybe they can't get players to sign due to the high cost of living

Very useful information. It looks like Olayinka’s experience there is limited (four Arsenal U23s appearances if Transfermrkt are to be relied upon), but you’d expect him to have the attributes to do quite well in that role.

I’m looking forward to Olayinka getting back to full fitness and providing some dynamism in midfield and would prefer to have him there driving us forwards, which would hopefully mean Elvis is safely installed at right-back again.

And I think the point that we’re discussing moving one of our most influential midfielders from an attacking sense to right-back doesn’t necessarily detract from the argument that Elvis being available is hugely important to us in the closing months of the season.

Like the way some believe totally that if Demi had played right back we would have got at least a point. Or as some have claimed MM cost us 3 points with that decision

Hobson at CB with no Cordner and a CM replacement who needed resting means 4 changes. Plus risking a CM and losing him for the Oldham game.......Yet some of you are claiming as fact that MM got it wrong.......The thing that amazes me is you genuinely and truly believe what you say.

Opinions are fine but why do some have to abuse the manager or player if they don't agree with the decision or the player wont make their all time SUFC 11.

Sorry to be truthful with you but YOUR starting 11 isn't not always the best option and like it or not the opposition have to be taken into account when selecting a team.

I'm looking forward to seeing him play as we need him ! I'd have olyinka, mellis, fergusson and holmes in the midfield

That is some statement:

Mellis hasn’t played one minute in a Southend team this season. Given this, how is he, at this point in our season, a first choice CM?

We also look much more solid with the midfield overload of a central 3, that a 451/4231/433 (whatever you want to call it) provides, yet you are pronouncing a switch to a midfield 4.

Who plays up front? We have well documented struggles with availability of suitable strikers this season and yet I assume you’re advocating a front two.

Looking at the pen again it appears that young Montgomery made up the takers mind for him;

It seems today is yet another day to slag off Aquah.Yes i agree he is inexperienced and in normal circumstances would be loaned out to gain better experience. However we need a target man to hold up the ball and bring other players into play we haven't got anyone else who can do that job so we have to accept it.As I have already said elsewhere on this thread cant see Ranger being available anytime soon. Its not Aquah fault he is doing his best.No I am not his agent!!!

Should be noted there is a big difference between slagging a player off and just saying he isnt good enough. Which to be fair is what most reasonable posters do.

He may be one for the future and shouldnt be in the side at this point in his career not his fault, but the fact remains that we are looking at relegation and cant score goals so he is going to be in the spotlight for this.

Our next opponents are Oldham. Their record this season makes interesting reading. They have scored more goals than any other side in the division bar Exeter. However they have conceded more goals than any other side bar none. Hmmmm........so our match has nil-nil written all over it.....

Or classic 4-4 draw.

Even if he’d dived that way,he wouldn’t have got his fingertips near it.
You’re remembering keepers don’t usually reach their prime when under 30, but many wouldn’t describe him as young (27 next month).

We are not talking Eric Cantona here. Monty has'nt even moved early in penalty terms. That lad never changed his mind and it was never going to be saved.
