Saturday's match against Chesterfield sees 4th year referee, Roger East from Salisbury, in charge and making his second visit of the season.
He achieved some success as an Assistant Referee being appointed to the 2004 Cup Final and a couple of playoff finals. Wasn't uniformly popular especially in his Conference days but seems to have settled into the Football League and has refereed a good number of Championship games.
His previous visit this season wasn't great on a number of levels. Firstly, we were awful. Secondly he wasn't much better with 6 cautions shared equally between the two teams. We were very lucky to get away with only a 3-1 defeat.
Before that, Southend games officiated included Northampton and Yeovil, both away three seasons ago, Millwall at home the season before last and Brighton away last season.
The other one was Exeter away last season when we lost 1-0 and he sent off Corr whilst he was playing for them. He also sent off Ibehre for us.
The shaven-headed Mr East does not skimp on his cards, but I don't think we'd had much cause for complaint up until the Port Vale match. His 63 yellows and 2 reds from 17 games is comfortably above average.
His assistants will be Glenn Hambling from Norwich and regular visitor Tony Mason from Sidcup. Fourth official is the ginger-haired school teacher from Ipswich, Carl Fitch.
