Memory Lane Classic Own Goals

Well that own goal lives in my memory. Goal was in very last minutes, and it was of such quality that I thought he might wear the no. 9 shirt next time out. Opposition was Bristol Rovers, and it put the score not to 0-4 but, wait for it, 3-4.
This match was played a week after a 5-4 win at Q.P.R. and was the final first team match the former W.H.U. goalkeeper Brian Rhodes played for us. Seem to remember we were 3-1 ahead, (2-1 at half-time according to the history book) before the late collapse with the winning goal being scored as previously mentioned by the late great Peter Watson. Our goals were scored by Ray Smith, Mike Beesley & Derek Woodley. The following week with Peter Goy back in goal we won 3-0 at Boundary Park, Oldham with goals by Jim Conway, and Mike Beesley & Ray Smith again. The attendance was over 12,000. Brian Rhodes record for Southend United was played 11 games 3 wins, 3 draws 5 defeats. For 21, against 25. Back then scoring and conceding goals was never a problem.

Indeed not, Dave, as mentioned in earlier post.

A good result at Oldham as they were 15 places above us in a promotion place. Oldham in February ? Must have been freezing ! It wasn't quite the following week as we had made our customary exit from the Cup in the first round, somewhat embarrassingly at then non-league Yeovil, so had a bit of a break.

That win heralded our best spell of the season with 6 wins and 2 draws from 9 matches, banishing relegation concerns.

Didn't Adam Barrett kick the ground and the ball went in v Col U away, or was it finished by someone else (memory fading)

If you want to see a top drawer Og, it takes alot to beat Henry Newton scoring this corker against Man City whilst playing for Everton, 1972. (the o.g. is about 3m 46s)

Watch out for Rodney Marsh (9), Francis Lee (10), Mike Summerbee (7) Colin Bell (8) playing for City, wearing a looky likey Crystal Palace strip lol....enjoy
