John McGreal talks to the press before the game

Colchester United boss John McGreal set to make changes for Southend United visit

Colchester United head coach John McGreal could ask some of his regulars to make amends for their below-par performance at Stevenage when they host Southend United tonight.

The U’s host their Essex neighbours in their Checkatrade Trophy Group B match, looking for a positive result following their disappointing 3-1 loss at Broadhall Way, last weekend.

McGreal made seven changes to his side for their group opener in the competition against Southampton under-21s last month.

The likes of Mikael Mandron, Frankie Kent and Brandon Comley could all feature against Blues, at the JobServe Community Stadium.

However, the U’s boss says he is mulling over asking some of his starting line-up against Stevenage to play again, after their showing last weekend.

McGreal said: “We could make changes but we could also ask the players that were out there against Stevenage to go again, after that second-half performance.”

Colchester’s home clash with Southend tonight is their third of seven matches in October and McGreal says it is important they keep players fresh.

“This month is an intense month, with seven games to play,” said the U’s boss.

“It’s good, because you go Saturday-Tuesday and it’s great that the games come thick and fast.

“Players will have knocks but it’s how we go about it and recover.

“When people come off the gas a little bit because it will happen or we have to rest one or two players to keep them fresh, we need those players to back it up.”

Meanwhile, McGreal admits that Colchester have become a ‘scalp’ in League Two following their impressive start to the season.

Stevenage’s delight was evident for all to see after they beat the U’s but the Colchester boss says it was just one game.

He added: “We’re probably a scalp now.

“Teams celebrate in different ways but it wasn’t an FA Cup or European Cup final there.

“It was a division two game and it’s three points – that’s all that’s been lost.

“All that they’ve won is three points.

“They might have won the battle but they haven’t won the war.

“It’s a long way in the season and we’ll continue to grind out and do a lot of work, for the games coming up.”

Chis Powell talks to the Southend United OS before the game

Chris Powell has reiterated the importance of the Checkatrade Trophy with the prize of walking out at Wembley at the end of it.

Blues travel to local rivals Colchester United on Tuesday on the back of their opening group game victory over Cambridge.

Blues will be without Jason Demetriou and Harry Kyprianou who are on international duty, while Tom Hopper and John White are sidelined with injuries.

Despite some issues to overcome surrounding the team selection, Powell will be going to the JobServe Community Stadium looking to all but clinch progression into the next round.

“We’ve got a rough idea of what we’re going to do but it has taken up most of my Sunday,” he said.

“John White and Tom Hopper both got slight hamstring injuries. They’re not as bad as we first thought. In three-game weeks, especially the input of work Tom Hopper gets through, he felt a bit of a niggle but it was more cramp, he got stamped on his ankle and he went through the wars last week, so hopefully he’ll be ok.

“John has been very good for us and I think it was the culmination of the travelling, the games and again, he didn’t want to make it worse, so he came off.

“They won’t be included for the Colchester game but I would think an outside chance for Gillingham.

“We’ve looked through a few scenarios and we’ll be ready for the game.”

Blues are unbeaten in their last four games heading into the game, whereas Colchester lost 3-1 to Stevenage at the weekend.

“They’ve done ok,” Powell said. “They have a way of running their club and producing players. They’re a category Two Academy which is quite amazing being in League Two but that’s what they’re focussed on.

“They have some experienced players at League One and Two level, but we have to go there and keep our run going.

“Most sides in the Checkatrade see this as an opportunity to play some other players that need game time because the league is most important, until they get further on.

"But I’m thinking, it’s an Essex Derby and at the end of it [the competition] there’s Wembley. That’s so powerful. If you need one thing to focus on in these games, at the end of it you could be walking out under the arch at Wembley.

“That would be great for a club like ours to progress in the competition and see how far we can get.”

Chris Powell talks to Chris Phillips of the Echo

Southend United are facing a centre-back shortage ahead of tonight’s Checkatrade Trophy clash at Colchester United.

John White will miss out on facing his former side with the hamstring problem he suffered against Oxford United on Saturday, while Harry Kyprianou is on international duty with Cyprus under-21s.

And Blues boss Chris Powell is therefore lacking options at the heart of the back four.

“Thinking about who to play took up most of my Sunday but we will have to have a role call and see who is available,” said Powell.

“Ideally, I would like to rest some players ahead of the Gillingham game this weekend but it could well be a case of needs must.”

Experienced centre-back Michael Turner has been among those to traditionally be rested in cup competitions but he may be forced into action tonight.

Long-term absentee Rob Kiernan is not yet ready to return while Harry Lennon has not featured since the opening day of the season.

And Powell must now also do without White and top goalscorer Tom Hopper, with both limping off at the weekend.

Jason Demetriou will also miss this evening’s encounter due to his involvement with Cyprus.

That is likely to see Elvis Bwomono recalled at right-back but Powell must pay close attention to the competition’s rules.

“We have to be inside the rules and regulations of the competition, which are quite tricky,” said Powell.

“You have to have four from the game before and four who have played 40 games or more so there are a few details you have to clarify and that also comes into your thinking.”

"Watch All Live Premier League Games Here" made me laugh.

Loving the look of that line up. Big night for some youths to set up and prove themselves.

Bloody hell, why bother. This pointless cup must cost the clubs money they can ill afford to open up the stadium to play in front of half a dozen diehards. Waste of time and money.

Quite happy with the line up to be honest, good to see the youth getting a run out, the only starting change i would have made would have been to rest Moore.

Well the £10,000 prize money for a win probably helps.
