Official Match Thread Colchester Utd vs Southend Utd CheckaTrade Trophy

My word, that was atrocious. Moore was the best Southend player by a country mile, although Bwomono had his moments. Hendrie did OK. Feel for Gard, hope he's OK. McCoulsky was incredibly poor. If Wabo and Ba can't do any better than that, they shouldn't be at the club.

Not sure how anyone can be that surprised. We played a lot of kids vs Col U side taking it a bit more seriously. Its clear CP isn't bothered about the competition and is focused on the league.

We need to thump Southampton U21, in order to progress to the next round.

Well that was poor. After 10 mins we started to get on top and play more football. Then that silly goal giveaway from the throw in, which none of our lot attacked, especially as we looked dodgy on their previous long throw. No one on the far post either.
Midfield 3 looked lightweight, Klass exceptionally poor, , slow, lacking energy, gave the ball kept losing possession through lack of control, no urgency, sluggish, half challenges. Hutchinson tried a bit and one curler, otherwise anonymous. Batlokwa best of the 3 , especially first half with some neat touches.
We Never looked like scoring really, no ability to slip the ball through for Robinson on Mc Coulsky. Robbo didnt look to bothered barely involved. Mc Coulsky better, at least ran around a lot and unlucky not to head one home. Surprised by Mc Laughlin as captain, it didnt seem to inspire him as he disappeared for long periods. At the back Dieng was solid but as a new partnership with Bwomono and Moore , looked a bit out of position at times. Not many headers won at the back. Hendrie looked strong in the first half in particular, some strong runs and as usual from him good crosses, looks able to step up if needs be.
Best of the bunch by far were Moore and Bwomono, only two to shine and put their hand up, apart from great to see Dru starting to look strong and like his old self in cameo. Bishop did ok in goal, kicks well. The rest put their feet up rather than their hands making it easy for Sir Chris to consider Saturdays potentials,
Not a lot of quality to be seen and a lack of endeavour, giving the ball away too cheaply, very few chances for us despite corners and defensively easily cut through.
At least I get to walk to the game this Saturday and will be sitting just behind our lads dug out but considerable improvement will be needed after Oxford especially at the back given Eaves confidence booster from his wonder goal at Portsmouth. Both Eaves and Hopper in top 10 goalscorers, but will Hopper be fit?

I wasted my money and time going to this, I should of known better, not a good performance by any means, McLaughlin was awful as were our front two in the first half but none of our players give them the ball, to many hit and hope long balls for them to deal with.

No - even the narrowest of wins (or even a draw with the penalties bonus point) would be enough to progress.

Chris Powell talks to Chris Phillips of the Echo

Southend United are facing a centre-back shortage ahead of tonight’s Checkatrade Trophy clash at Colchester United.

John White will miss out on facing his former side with the hamstring problem he suffered against Oxford United on Saturday, while Harry Kyprianou is on international duty with Cyprus under-21s.

A "Harry Kyprianou" was reported by the Thurrock Independent as playing for Bishop Stortford last night in the Velocity Trophy against Tilbury. Apparently lucky to avoid a red card. Mistaken identity presumably ?

Maybe the Thurrock Independent is as accurate with it's proof reading as the Southend Echo sometimes is.

Well their team sheet says a "Hector" Kyprianou played but the Bishops Stortford twitter says "Harry" Kyprianou got booked. My mates who were manager and assistant there quit a couple of weeks ago as the owner chairman was too involved and wanted to make playing decisions. Jamie Cureton and the owner/chairman Steve Smith are now joint managers. Steve Smith is good pals with Kev Maher so players going there would not be a surprise but Harry has done well when called upon and with our centre back shortage should be here IMO. Hasn't been made public by the club either if he has gone there.
