Just as the Notts County faithful were beginning to come to terms with their new found regality and success, it turns out Sol Campbell's departure might just be the tip of the iceberg that sinks them.

Rumours are rife that the Football League aren't happy with the information disclosed by the club regarding their take over by the mysterious Munto Finance, with several of the figures under investigation.

One of the shadowy "power brokers" that helped organise the deal have, funnily enough, emerged as not being the clean shaven, law abiding citizens they'd have you believe. Russell King has previously been convicted of fraud and served a two year spell at her majesty's service. Not content with just the one conviction, King scored a brace and has had £1.9m of assets frozen by courts in that oh-so-transparent tax haven of Jersey because of unpaid debt.

Another important member of the investigation is Peter Trembling, the newly appointed chief executive who has previous with Everton. Trembling left his position as head of commercial partnerships at the Merseyside club after just eleven months amid financial disagreements and suddenly appeared in Nottingham this Summer.

Trembling and King, both key members of the Qadbak offshore company that is listed as owners of the club, were integral in bringing Sven-Goran Eriksson to the club in a separate deal which is undergoing similar scrutiny. An associate of King, Nathan Willett and his father Peter, promised Erikkson another contract, separate from the £40,000 per week he earns at County, to work on a separate company named Swiss Commodity Holding AG where Erikkson would become an ambassador. Sol Campbell was offered a similar deal and shifted when he smelt the proverbial ****-storm approaching.

The company has yet to float on the market but boasts a portfolio with a value over £97bn (Yes, that's billion) and Erikkson has been assured that his stock value will rocket into the millions when it does. When this actually happens remains as much of a mystery as to who exactly is behind Munto Finance.

A string of national newspapers are looking into the web of companies that King and his partners are associated with, one of which being Belgravia who were once-upon-a-time connected with Newcastle, but the one fact that remains is that nobody knows for sure just who is responsible. All signs point to Munto Finance, yet who exactly is in charge there remains to be seen... So little is known about the company it could be headed by a Lord Lucan, Shergar and Elvis consortium and we'd be none the wiser.

After the Thaksin Shinawatra affair with Manchester City, the powers that be have strengthened the "fit and proper test" and the signs for Notts County are ominous... Unless the shroud of secrecy is lifted, they could be the first club to fall victim to the ruling and we'll see just how crippling a wage bill they have.

Sol Campbell might have been lambasted in the press this week for leaving after just one game, but he might have just made the wisest decision of his career.
