The referee for tonight's match is Oliver Langford from Darlaston, near Walsall in the West Midlands.

In his fifth season as a Football League referee, he has only refereed Southend four times before. First was the dreadful match (until the last minute anyway) at Leyton Orient in 2008/9. He didn't excel, but did better than the players. The second was the low key paint thing at Milton Keynes the following season. In both of those games he seemed to find it easier to caution away players than home ones.

His third Southend match was the 1-4 home defeat by Swindon last season when he cautioned Timlin, Kalala and, for them, Macca.

His fourth was earlier this season and somewhat controversial. In the 2-0 defeat at Oxford he only showed two soft yellow cards. Unfortunately they were both for Timlin.

His yellow card count must be one of the lowest in the League with just 31 yellows from 18 matches, which have also seen 3 red cards.

Assistants are Craig Hicks from Sutton who works for Surrey FA and Mark Mellor from Hemel Hempstead with Paul Kelly from Gillingham as 4th Official.

Best refereeing performance at the Hall for as long as I can remember. I am particularly vocal against refs (normally due to their inept incompetence) but Mr Langford was spot on tonight and handled difficult conditions well. Never looked out of control and must have been freezing.

Did ok but thought he allowed far too much to pass unbooked, particularly the fouls on Timlin - 3 or 4 which were really worthy of yellow cards - and the constant fouling on Corr.

Thought it was funny that in a game where Timlin barely gave a foul away, he yet again got booked by this ref.

The foul on him by Bury's 34 in the 25th minute or so was much more of a booking than the two Timlin fouls at Oxford, at a similarly early stage in the game.

Apart from that, did well. As did the players making sensible tackles in the conditions.

He sure doesn't like Timlin! On the whole not a bad ref but some free kicks he gave were for offences no worse than those he'd waved play on for earlier in the game (both Bury and us).

Did well generally but missed alot in the back and Sodje somehow escaped a booking despite giving away 4/5 FK's! And has been pointed out, booked Timlin for absolutely nadda.
