D:Day 70 year commemoration

Seeing that in the next week or two we will get the Queen's Birthday Honours list surely a Knighthood to all those still alive who took part in the D:Day Landings would be in order? Why not a posthumous one for all those not still alive who took part too?

How many are left would you say? 5k?

Whatever is done can't ever be enough. You listen to these blokes and they all say "we were just doing a job" I was lucky to be in France visiting Pegasus Bridge in 2004 at the same time as a British vet and felt honoured to shake his hand.

You can't begin to imagine what these guys went through so that you and I can enjoy the freedoms we all hold so close to heart and cherish now, even if we do take them for granted. I hope that in years to come the generation that comes after us and our children's children continue to pay their respects and remember the sacrifices they all made. I doff my cap to each and every single one of them......NEVER FORGET.

I believe ex Southend goalkeeper Harry Threadgold served as a commando during the war .

Watched a lot of the coverage, very emotional. Amazes me how many of these 90 year olds still have such an upright stance, brings a real tear to my eye...so much pride, so much humility.

Echo everything said above, just not surprised by the lack of interest from some quarters on this site.

The old deputy head at Southend High (from the 1970's) was reputed to have parachuted into Pegasus Bridge on D-Day; a very military man who commanded respect just by his presence.

I know this is D Day and victory came a little later in the Far East , but one of my old school teachers at Belfairs Mr John Allen who we used to take the micky out of be cause of his accent and slow manner spent the war in the hell hole Changi Prison .I did not find this out till a couple of years ago , I feel so ashamed with my self and I know all my friends would feel the same for what he would of gone through at the hands of the Japs .

Just loved the story about the old fella who walked out of his care home and made his own way to Normandy. Some people just never lose that sprite.

These care workers don't seem to realise the importance of commemorating the D:Day landings. If they had, they would have moved heaven and earth to get him to Normandy rather than stopping him

I think you're being a bit harsh on them, the gentleman couldn't find a place on any of the organised groups going. No-one expected him to go on his own. In an interview I heard with the car home manager, no-one was blaming him for going and indeed, the manager has arranged to go with him next year. It was just the case that no-one had been told he was going.

Of course I was and thank you so much for flagging up my totally unreasonable post. Please accept my most humble apologies if it offended you
