Referee's travelling expenses will be low on Saturday, with the man in charge being Frederick Graham who hails from Orsett - pretty much midway between the two clubs.
For geographical reasons, other than pre-season friendlies, neither Dagenham nor Southend have seen much of Fred over his many years officiating - just two games apiece (three of which involved Orient).
In 2011/12 he took charge of the fractious Carling Cup tie at home to Orient when he cautioned 6 visitors and sent off one of theirs. Only Mohsni was cautioned for us. We drew the match 1-1 but Orient went through on penalties.
His only other Southend match was another 1-1 with a red card. Our away match at Gillingham in 2007/8 when he dismissed Thurgood for them and also cautioned a couple of theirs. No cautions for us (Mohsni wasn't playing). For that match we had on the bench as unused subs: Hooper, Francis and Moussa - knew they'd never do much!
His two Dagenham against Orient matches, co-incidentally also in 2011/12 and 2007/8, both went Dagenham's way.
Fred got onto the League list in 2004/5 but was summarily removed after just one season, rather harshly in my opinion. However he stuck at it and fully deserved his reinstatement and has now been back for eight seasons. He started this season late through injury and has refereed just 12 matches producing 31 yellows and no reds.
He is one of the old school type of referee who will give the players every chance to get on with the game, but if they don't respond he knows where his cards are!
The two assistants are both from Suffolk with Adrian Sannerude having the longer journey from Lowestoft picking up Carl Fitch, a ginger-haired psychology teacher , at Ipswich on the way.
Fourth Official is David Rock from Hertfordshire who, by profession, is a qualified coach in numerous sports.
