Looking forward not back - Blues boss Kevin Maher

Southend United boss Kevin Maher will be looking forward not back when the Shrimpers head to Dagenham & Redbridge in the fourth round of the FA Trophy tomorrow.

Blues go into the game on the back of two successive victories and have now been beaten just once in seven matches.

But Maher is not getting carried away.

“Tuesday was good against Yeovil but it’s gone so we’re focusing on the next one and not looking back,” said the Shrimpers boss.

“We’re pleased with how it went and how we played but we’ve put it to bed and we’re looking towards Dagenham now.

“It’s a big month for us and we’ve had a good start but there’s a long way to go with some big games coming up.”

And Maher was also keen to impress he would be taking Saturday’s clash seriously, despite it being a break from the National League campaign.

“We always look to win games and this is a cup competition with a Wembley final so we want to do well in it,” said Maher.

“It’s the next game too so all our focus is on it.

“We don’t ever look too far ahead so everything is looking at Saturday and trying to bring the same intensity we showed against Yeovil.”

Saturday’s match is also a repeat of Maher’s first game in charge, back in October.

Dagenham won 3-0 that afternoon but Maher does not see Saturday’s game as a chance to show how much Blues have improved.

“I don’t really look at it like that,” said Maher.

“I look at it as a game on its own merit.

“It’s a tough one for us and Daryl (McMahon) has a really good team there.

“It will be a good test for us and we will be better than the last time we went. “ Maher has made significant changes since taking charge of the Shrimpers, with just three of the starting line-up from his first game in charge being selected against Yeovil last time out.

But the Blues boss may be forced into changes this weekend with both Rhys Murphy (knee) and Will Atkinson (hamstring) facing late fitness tests after going off injured against Yeovil Town.

“We will assess them both and see how they settle down but fingers crossed they will be OK, “said Maher.
“We have one or two we need to look at and one or two might come in.

“But there will be opportunities for people if they do come in and this is a game we will definitely be taking seriously.

“Every game, whether in the under 23s or friendly, should be taken seriously and we want to win.”

Defender John White and midfielder Jack Bridge are both still sidelined while Leon Davies and Harrison Neal are both cup tied.

Big Preview

Southend United v Dagenham & Redbridge

Big Preview.jpg

Overview:

Southend United’s first ever FA Trophy campaign continues on Saturday, as Kevin Maher’s side make the short trip to face Dagenham & Redbridge in the fourth round.

Blues surpassed National League South outfit Dorking Wanderers with a 2-1 victory to reach this stage, while the Daggers narrowly edged past Southern League South Division side Truro City, their tie was taken all the way to a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.

And now Maher will lead his side out at the Chigwell Construction Stadium for the second time since his appointment as Blues’ Head Coach, aiming for a better result than the 3-0 league defeat in his dugout debut.

It’ll be the first time the sides have clashed since John Still’s appointment as Head of Football at Roots Hall, he is very well acquainted with many at Dagenham and was involved with the club as recently as this season.

The Daggers’ former boss achieved two promotions during his time at the club.

The Opposition:

Blues last paid visit to Dagenham three months ago, and since, the Daggers have endured a mixed bag of results.

After their 3-0 victory against Maher’s side, Daryl McMahon’s outfit only tasted victory once in their following seven matches in all competitions, including five defeats.

But a strong show of character has turned their fortunes, seeing them produce a fine run of form, launching them back into the play-off picture, in sixth place and just four points from second.

The Daggers are the National League’s top scoring side, their attacking options ooze quality with the likes of Paul McCallum, Junior Morias, Angelo Balanta and Josh Walker all within their ranks.

And a familiar face for visiting Blues fans will be Myles Weston, who featured when the two sides clashed three months ago, contributing with an assist.

Form:

Blues have enjoyed an upturn in form and massively improved consistent performances.

In their last seven outings, Maher’s side have run out victors four times, drawing twice and losing just once.

Rectifying earlier struggles in front of goal, Blues have scored in each of their last seven matches.

But Saturday’s trophy tie will be a tough test for Southend, the Daggers winning five of their last six matches.

Two of their triumphs came against National League bottom side Dover Athletic, the two sides met twice within a week.

In their last six outings, McMahon’s side have bagged 13 goals.

From The Boss:

"It’s a big month for us,” said Maher.

"We’ve had a good start but there’s a long way to go with some big games coming up.

"Tuesday was good but it’s gone, we’re focusing on the next one now.

"The players have worked ever so hard in training and hopefully that’s what is starting to come out in games.

"It’s good to get points but you need consistency and we want to keep winning football matches.

"It’s a tough one for us and Darryl has a really good team there, it will be a good test for us and we will be better than the last time we went.

"We take every game seriously, under 23 games, friendlies, every game should be taken seriously.

"We always look to win games and this is a cup competition with a Wembley final so we want to do well in it, it’s the next game so all our focus is on it.

"We don’t look too far ahead, and we want the same level of intensity.

"Blues’ Team News:

Harrison Neal and Leon Davies will be unavailable for selection, having both already competed in the FA Trophy with their previous clubs.

Maher will make late calls on the fitness of Rhys Murphy and Will Atkinson, who were forced off the field with injury on Tuesday.

Simeon Akinola and James Dunne remain side-lined.

Ref Watch:

Jacob Miles will be the one calling the shots as Southend make the short trip to Dagenham.

He was the man in the middle when Blues travelled to Grimsby Town in November, as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Miles has taken charge of eight National League ties this season, showing 22 yellow cards and two reds.

Grzegorz Kornasiewicz and James Hurst will assist Miles, with Hugh Gilroy as fourth official.

Massive game for Gard and Rush to prove themselves here.

Suggests 3-4-3 and also that the squad is unbalanced. No central midfielders or strikers on a 7 man bench.

Long way to go before this is Maher's team but pleased to see Kensdale make his full debit.

Seems we're not taking this seriously
I think that's a fairly ok starting XI considering injuries, knocks and cup tied players. Don't mind Lopata starting on the bench either. I'd rather we focused on the league. A win today would be a nice bonus and keeps the momentum going.

seems like a 3 -5-2 formation, but can be changed to 3-4-3 if neccassary as Kinali can play forward as well as midfield.

No its 3-4-3 looking carefully at the selection ,i think Ralph will be LWB

Agree to an extent but if you pick Coulson over a fit and available Lopata you're not taking this seriously. If they want to use this to have a look at a few fringe players its fair enough but personally I'm a bit disappointed although relieved I didn't get a ticket. Of course we'll spank them now and I'll look a dick.

Show the same graft as seen on Tuesday we'll still have a chance. Let's see if the outsiders are worthy...

Don’t like that formation with those players. Gard and Ferguson will get overrun in midfield as a pair rather than a three and what worked so well Tuesday was Ralph attacking from centre-half. Coulson can’t do that. It needs all three centre-backs comfortable on the ball. Hobson and Kensdale are but that’s not Coulson’s game.

So the leagues top scorers at full strength take on Coulson, Fergy and Gard ?

I thought Atko wouldnt make it to the bench or otherwise
