Our first referee of the New Year is David Coote from Winthorpe near Newark. He is a second year referee and things have been pretty mixed for him. He works for the Nottinghamshire FA as their Referees' Development Officer (which won't harm his refereeing career!).
He has refereed three Southend matches previously. Firstly when I don't think any blame was attributed to him for our late, late defeat at Chesterfield and then in our draw at Torquay. Most recently he looked a little out of his depth to me when he officiated last season's home match against a somewhat fractious Stevenage side resulting in seven yellows and a red mostly to them.
THis season he has a pretty average 59 yellows and 4 reds from 19 games.
The Assistants will be Paul Kelly from Gillingham and Adrian Sannerude from Lowestoft with David Rock from Hertfordshire, a qualified coach in many different sports, carrying out the 4th official duties.
