Does anyone have any sympathy for them? I'm in two minds because of how we had to stick to the rules last season, and the season before that, and the season before that...I'm just interested to see what people think.

I don't know enough about why Derby are in such a mess to give a fact based answer, my emotional answer is of no sympathy.
They seem to have stretched themselves in an effort to reach the land of gold and honey, aka the Premship and have fallen well short.
How much did Lampard spend?
The abuse of privilege in the FA Cup by playing youths, and taking the money for doing so, counts against them .

They appear to be relegation certs.

Financial cheats and over more than the one season. If the EFL had any guts Derby should have been relegated and not Wycombe.

Just to clarify, their whole 1st were out with Covid. The FA forced them to play so they had to play their U23s. (Assuming you believe them, of course.)
