Do Grammar schools aid social mobity?

Personally, I don't think so and I went to one (albeit only in the 6th form).

They certainly aid social mobility more than public schools from which a number of Guardian columnists have benefited.

Some of these guys must have particularly thick skins to make a comfortable living writing about how unfair the system is.

Not certain but I think you'll find that John Harris went to a northern Grammar school.

He went to a state secondary, Catholic sixth form and then Oxford.
