There is little to recall in the way of history between the two clubs other than a comfortable home victory in the Cup and a bit of food poisoning.
Sunday's referee is David Rock from Hertford, refereeing in his first season as a Football League referee. He is a little different from the other first year referees who have invariably been rushed through the system after just one or two seasons on the National League/Conference. These young promotees often look a bit light on experience in their first season. David Rock has actually spent 5 years at the top non-league level before finally getting the nod at the start of this season. As a result of that he has refereed Dover 17 times (7 wins, 5 draws, 5 defeats) and Southend not at all.
He is the Operations Director of All For Sport where he’s worked for 14 years. They are a teaching and learning organisation who specialise in supporting primary schools with their delivery of physical education through curriculum PE support and Teacher Development. He is also a Director of a company providing an Interactive Primary Physical Education Resource.
He is a qualified coach in all manner of sports.
I have seen him referee in non-league on many occasions and he has usually been good favouring a non-intervention approach when the players have allowed that. I did see him have one poor match at Bromley against Wrexham but far more good (including an excellent Vase quarterfinal at Bowers) than bad.
His short League career has seen him maintain his low card count with just 23 yellows and 1 red from 10 matches.
Assisting will be Mike Desborough, Referees Development Officer for Bedfordshire FA, previously from Hampshire, and landscape gardener and horticulturist, Leigh Crowhurst from Uckfield in East Sussex. Fourth Official is a bit of an odd appointment – Dean Whitestone from Northampton. The former Metropolitan Police Officer who had been one of the better referees in recent years and this year finally became a full-time SG2 referee, officiating predominantly in the Championship.
