Memory Lane Down Memory Lane..............

I think that was there only defeat between Boxing Day and the end of the season - where they won promotion by beating us 4-1 at RH on the last game on a Friday night.

Was this the game when Ginger and his mates took on about 500 burnley fans on South Stand West corner.... O/B in them days where really like dixon of doc green... Ginger laid out about 4 on his own...

The blokes a true Southend legend[/QUOTE]

And Steve Waller walked on the pitch holding a Southend flag aloft in front of the Burnley hoardes.

thats right. i remeber ginger the same season at reading. he jumped the fence into the home side all on his own and offered the whole stand a fight. they didnt know what to do, they didnt touch him, amazin, ill never forget that.

That was Paul Chandler, surely?

Yes it was Paul Chandler... Gingers mob went in the home section about 10 minutes into the game... kick it of big time... and Mr Chandler wanted to join the action.lol

Hey I was a pup.... all this made me proud to be a SHRIMPER !!

i think we were in with a chance of promotion that season, blew it towards the end i think. find the burnley 15 then! thats 2 of us

Reading away was the following game on the Saturday. I think we drew there, then lost at Newport which did for us.

I seem to recall Thommo (Gary Townsend), Gary Levy, Stalky(?), and Dave Brabbing being on the coach.

I remember a bloke from shenfield call Oddball I think he was Gary Townsend mate... anyone else remember this bloke ??

Remember him. He always wore a brown leather jacket, and had a dodgy squint and a bit of a stoop -hence the nickname I suppose. I remember a couple of times having to do detours on the way home to Brentwood to drop him off.

There was also a very tall bloke (one of Thommo's mates) called Kev, and a bloke with really long, greasy lank hair - who looked a bit of an El Bandido. I think he stil goes to home games. And Terry Chamberlain was another of his mates.

there was a bloke call Kevin Barnes a tall bloke from Wickford he was a Mod and the Wickford boys used to call him leader .....

That was him. I wouldn't have had him down as a "leader"

When Harlow Town fans run a cross the Pitch towards the North Bank (southend singers)... hence the name Leader was dropped...lol

1st bloke over the north west fence.lol

I remember him now! he does indeed still go to games, think west stand. he was a bit vocal at times, still is i think.
I have a couple of pics from an away game at chesterfield early 80's, may jog a few peoples memories, ill post them on here when i return to spain next week.

Chopper still goes now ... See him in the West every home game, i started travelling with Spotter in '86, just before Chris and Marion took over.

The main people i remember from back then (not neccessarily boys)were Ginger(obviously), Stumpy, Tommo (Gary Townsend), Herman, Phil Cox and his mate Graeme, Kev Stansfield (Brains), Norman and Eric Salmon, Derek, ginger Rob and one of his mates from Shoebury (tall, thin guy with glasses who still goes now but i can't remember his name  ... he used to drive a pale blue Mk II Escort)

Tom White. There was the bloke who used to go at times as well who never opened his mouth, and no-one knew his name. He was Mystery Man. I named one of your mates The Man with No Shoulders - because he didn't have any. Don't know his name.
