Hi all, me a few others are staying in Edinburgh from Fri 23rd OCtober-Sun 25th October (taking in the Carlisle away game on the Saturday). Looking for advice on things to do? Places to go? Bars/clubs to go to/avoid etc etc

go to The Dome in George Street.

Last time i was there they were redeveloping the centre for the trams.

Drive 4 hours North and meet me Glasgow, Irish and a few others for a beer fuelled train journey down to Carlisle

;)

There are some good pubs along Rose Street, but it's also a magnet for stag trips, so whether that's a good idea or not depends on the make-up of your group.

If you're doing tourist stuff, then Edinburgh Castle really is cracking. An obvious choice, but there's a good reason why people come from all over the world to visit. The Scott Monument and Calton Hill are good both for views of the city and blowing away the cobwebs if you've had a bit of a session.

Naps gave me a brilliant guide on things to do.

The three sisters is excellent and loved it as Bobby said. Pulled a stunning Kat Slater (In her younger skinnier days) doppleganger and my mate pulled a Jessica Simpson look a like.

The pubic triangle is another good area and I would suggest a visit. Its a decent walk away but worth a go. Really nice town and really recommned a visit to anyone who has not been. The castle is good in the day if you get chance.

My adivce? Don't go to Edinburgh, it's a sh*thole ;)

Seriously though, now it's booked up & you can't change your mind, Rose St, Grassmarket and the "specialist" bars DtS mentions are all worth a trip as is The Three Sisters (was on a stag night in there and the theme of the night was trying to get stealth upskirt mobile phone shots...)

yup agree with this. The National Museum is worth a visit if you're into museums... the castle is excellent, and a good starting point for the pubs. if you like hiking then Arthurs Seat is apparently good and you get stunning views apparently

George, give us your email address and I'll send you a decent guide. Only do the Castle if you have enough time, same for the Museum.

it doesn't take long to do, and is worth it if it's your first visit to edinburgh. i thought the hour long tour was long enough, and it's right in the middle of the old town so not out of the way.

agree about the museum... only really worth it if into that kind of stuff

Ive done the castle 5 times now - everyone who came to visit wanted to see it, to be honest though, you can get the decent views from the entrance, and there are better views of the city from the Mound and Arthur's Seat. As for inside, well, there are plenty of better castles around. But if you've got a spare few hours, I guess it's something to do.

Name five :)

I do like a good castle and Edinburgh is certainly one of the best I have visited (I found the Royal Scots Museum fascinating).

Honourable mentions to Cardiff, Battle, Elizabeth Castle (St Helier) and of course Hadleigh Castle :)

Back to Edinburgh, the National Gallery is good. And free!
