Just read in the paper that the BBC to save money are not going to send out their pundits to the European Championships unless England or Eire get to the quarter finals.

Eire!!!!!!!!!?????? why the hell do they think that the whole country cares about the paddies let alone spend my licence fee on sending Shearer and crew on a jolly? Considering the Irish would rather jump off a cliff than watch an England game why should we be bothered - do the Irish pay the BBC license fee? They can't stand us so why are we bothering?

I read somewhere that as republics go ,France is actually nearer - i'd rather watch them,at least they don't dislike us as much as the 'oirish'!

Rant over

Well said.

Ignoring the fact that sending Shearer, Lineker et al on a jolly adds nothing to the viewing experience of those paying for it, it is an insult to those who died so that Ireland wouldn't be part of the UK.

I've never got this love in for that lot .. they aren't even part of Great Britain so why BRITISH broadcasters give them airtime is beyond me

It is bizarre how it's seen as perfectly acceptable, even amusing, for the Scots, Welsh and Irish to hate the English, yet the dastardly English are assumed, even expected, to support the our plucky little Celtic cousins

I guess because the majority of them are only Oirish because of some distant ancestor and play in the Prem. I care less about them than I do about England which is already pretty non-existant.

Them choosing to focus on 'Eire' is about as odd as you using 'Eire' to refer to the Republic of Ireland.

You mean they are traitors as they've turned their back on their country?

All the more reason to shun them than support them I'd have thought.

I guess a player will take any opportunity to play on the world stage, hence a certain Mr. Eastwood's glowing international career. :nope:

Putting the Irish question to one side, I have never seen the point of sending the pundits out to either the World Cup or the Euros. C4 used to do TV coverage for Serie A many moons ago, and used to do the commentary from West London ! ! Never realised until Ray Wilkins made a joke about it. The new Match of the Day studio in Manchester can be easily used... so don't send them out there at all ! !

Regarding coverage of Ireland - there are a lot of Irish immigrants in the UK, and a lot of people would probably want to have coverage of their games with specialised punditry. My missus is from Dublin - hence makes our son half-English/half-Irish, but born in Southend before anyone asks - and I will take an interest in Ireland's games. But if they play England, then I want England to win 3-0. Or 4-0. Or 5-0 on a good day... If they play the Jarmans, then I want the Paddys to win.

Historically, the Micks like to remain neutral when confronted with the Germans.

By your logic, the BBC should be backing every ****ing third world craphole under the sun which sends its detritus to our fair shores.

They've got it ...

IN IRELAND !!!!!

all they need do is catch a plane or ferry and **** off from whence they came

It's better than a lot of the dross on UK telly incidentally. Johnny Giles, one of their top studio pundits, is great at telling it like it is and isn't afraid to upset people.

Although I do remember, many years ago, being on holiday in Ireland and watching them play Spain on RTE. At the end of the game, they reviewed results from everywhere else and we were told by the anchorman "England have beaten Turkey 4-0, Paul Gascoigne scoring both goals"

Didn't say I agree with it... Just stating why I think the BBC have highlighted Ireland's games as well as England.

I think the BBC would prefer any country to support, rather than our own, if I was to to be truthful...
