Terrible news. Liver cancer is very serious. Little news has been revealed which is worrying, hopefully I'm being overly pessimistic but this sounds very bad news
 
She was always cursed with bad luck injury-wise during her career, and now this, the biggest curse of all. Hope she battles through.
 
Terribly sad news for her. Thoughts are with her and her loved ones during the battles ahead.
 
It's unbelievable isn't it? She's had so many injuries and illnesses, including primary sclerosing cholangitis, which is also a liver disease. Hopefully that has led to her liver being monitored regularly, which hopefully has led to an early diagnosis of cancer.
 
Unfortunately Elena has now lost her battle with cancer. Sad news and at such a young age. R I P
 
What a tragedy. So very very sad.

Ten of the competitors from London 2012 have now died. A very sobering thought.
 
@olympicstatman has the list. I'll confess to not having heard of any of the others but still...
 
This really is shocking. I can't believe it. I feel so sorry for her family.

It was also very moving seeing the minutes silence by all the players at the Madrid Masters earlier this week.
