England recover well (after losing the toss) to put themselves on top against Sri Lanka at the end of Day 1. A special mention to Dom Bess, Stuart Broad and Joe Root. Dan Lawrence makes his debut in the ever spin-friendly Galle.

A great 73 from Dan, which has both an up and a down side. Whilst it's a really good debut (the selectors will no doubt take note) which will boost his personal confidence, some will point out that it was achieved against a sub-standard bowling attack

Another amazing barmy army story as fan waited ten months for the tour then moved from his viewing vantage point before a ball is bowled.

I think Lawrence will be annoyed at missing out on a century. That being said, batting for the best part of 3 hour's in Sri Lankan conditions takes it's toll both mentally and physically.

Did anyone else notice that Sibley was palpably out lbw 3 times early on in his innings of 50 odd “not out”?
Each review clearly showed the ball about to hit the stumps but they persist with the ludicrous “umpire’s decision” ruling. Michael Holding ,to his credit, kept on and on about this last summer.

I take it you are referring to "umpire's call" ?

There's a margin of error with hawkeye tracking and the umpire's call basically represents that margin of error. Batsmen traditionally have been given the benefit of the doubt so if you start giving out balls clipping the stumps/bails (none of Sibley's "palpably out lbws" were smashing into the stumps and indeed the umpires gave them not out) you're actually changing the game.

The most important thing with decisions is consistency so both sides play by the same standards: this is why there is the need for rules in the first place. The issue with umpire's decision is that it allows two identical deliveries to have different results where the only variable is the umpire's initial decision. Fortunately the umpires had good matches and were consistent but the danger is an umpire may be swayed by one side more than the other creating an uneven contest.

India v England First Test in Chennai

England win toss and elected to Bat

Day One

England 263-3

Day Two

England 555-8 (180 overs): Root 218, Sibley 87, Stokes 82.

Love watching this live on Channel 4 again (Back after 16 year absence) and Catch Up on My 4.

Only problem 03.45 GMT Start. ? ?

Cook is settling into the presenters role well.. keeps banging on about tests being on free view tv. So don’t expect him on sky etc any time soon

Haven't missed a minute so far. Well done to Channel 4 for viewing it and for getting SAC. Brilliant stuff from England, was watching Root & Stokes whilst munching on me weetabix, good mood now and was a great start to a Saturday, carpe diem and all that.

Wonder where the Root out brigade as now !!
Seems to be enjoying his game again and now it’s how the spinners can get something out the pitch. Seems general concenous it will break up Bess, Leach and maybe Root again ( Is Root on a hat trick from last test match ?) seem to recall got two in two balls to finish last match

It's a bit like the Alastair Cook situation all over again. Those people will only realise how good JR is once he has retired (not for a long while yet) and will be sorely missed.
