India on top but England have a wicket.

It's been pretty easy for the Indians and Ganguly basically seemed to get about by trying the most audacious runscoring shot possible.

Lots of batting to come and lots of work for England to do. Silver lining if you layed England though....

Didn't get round to backing India for this one. India are dead certs. England rarely string together consecutive ODI performances, India will be fired up and the short boundaries at Bristol suit India more than England's style of play.

India scored 320 odd in the world cup at this ground in 1999. Tendulkar hit 140 odd off about 100 balls.

To be honest, the body language is so different from the Indians for this game. I hoenstly think they will win any game they are up for.

The odd thing is that it seems dependant almost entirely on the weather. I'd be very tempted to back India in the sun and England when overcast/cold. I don't think they'll quite hit 320 but should go over 300. Still Dhoni to come amongst others and likely there'll be a lot of wickets to play about with.

At least from a patriotic point of view, Singh's arrival has dried the runs up somewhat.

(edit: Oops, which game am I watching!)

With Mascarenhas bowling the runs won't stay dried up for long.

Ive not been entirely convinced by the deployment of Mascarenhas at number 8. With Collingwood Bopara Bell and Pieterson all able to send some overs down with varying degrees of efficiency Id rather have a genuine Batsman such as Shah take his place, or a genuine bowler, such as Kirtley,

If we are relying too heavily on a number 8 in a 50 over game to get some runs then we are struggling to win anyway, and a better bowler during their innings would be just as likely to get us out of that hole as Mascarenhas's ability with the bat.....

(Obvioulsy I am now hoping for egg on the face and a Mascarenhas hattrick..)

I think you can keep you eggs in their baskets.

Whatever that means.

The important thing is that India are facing him without the pressure to score quick runs now and they're finding it easy. Freddy has his typical bowling approach and it's no surprise seeing him amongst the wickets. Anderson has asked a few questions too but it's clear that they were targetting Tremlett for early runs and it's worked. Harsh lesson for him today

I'm glad Monty's been dropped, I'd rather have a bits and pieces player in the ODI team - a Yardy or Darymple for example. I just don't think spin's that important in ODI, as it is in the test arena, or even 20/20.

Monty's got no mystery ball, which will always hinder him in the ODI format, especially with his batting.

I know what you're saying about the variation but he can generate so much turn that I feel it's just a matter of playing plenty and being given some chance to develop his ODI style. It would help having Flintoff and Collingwood both playing because we then have the luxury of taking him out of the side.

Yardy and Dalrymple, in my eyes, have no real place in the team with Flintoff in.

according to botham the pitch isn't going to change and England should have a chance, can't see it tho.

I think its important for your no.8 to be able to bat in ODI cricket (and your no.9 not to be a complete bunny) as it allows your no.s 6 and 7 to play with more freedom, knowing that if they get out the next man in can still bat.

But otherwise I agree with you. My problem with the selection of Mascarenhas is that I don't think he is a good enough bowler to take wickets. I don't think his bowling is significantly better than Collingwood's or Bopara's, so why not use those two, who are worth a place as specialist bats, instead if all you want to do is use a bowler to keep it tight?

That is also my view on Monty. If you pick Monty you need to bowl him as an attacking option, with man around the bat. If you just want a slow bowler to keep it tight, we might as well pick Blackwell who *might* come off with the bat and hit 30 off 15 balls at the end.

I can't stand bits and pieces players in international cricket. I have no problem with players like Flintoff, Collingwood and Bopara who are good enough to justify their position in at least one discipline, but the likes of Dalrymple, Mascarenhas and historically Alleyne, Reeve etc have no place in international cricket.

Get players like KP, Cook and Bell to develop their bowling, or Tremlett, Broad and Plunkett to develop their batting.

I love Beefy, but as a commentator he tends to be a knee-jerker.

Bumble is indeed a legend

Nice one! :p

Reminds me of the Npower girls at the last Oval Test....loverly....;)

Bumble and his commentary on 20/20 finals day at the Oval a couple of years ago......I was sitting in the OCS stand watching it and I was almost in tears. It was the funniest thing I had seen in ages! :hilarious:

Prior and Cook gone in consecutive balls :( Bugger!

2 men in without facing now. 76-2.
