Robin Das has signed a 2 year deal to stay with Essex

Froze Khushi and Charlie Allison have also signed deals for 2024 season.

Dean Elgar is rumoured as Alastair Cook’s replacement.

Current squad
Tom Westley 2025
Feroze Khushi 2024
Robin Das 2025
Charlie Allison 2024
Jordan Cox 2026
Matt Critchley 2024 2027
Paul Walter 2025
Luc Benkenstein 2024 2027
Simon Harmer 2026
Michael Pepper 2025
Adam Rossington 2025
Noah Thain 2024 2026
Ben Allison 2024
Jamal Richards?
Shane Snater 2025
Sam Cook 2025
Jamie Porter 2024 2027
Aaron Beard 2024

Out of contract but not released
Nick Browne 2024

Released
Josh Rymell
Eshan Kalley
Aron Nijjar
Will Buttleman

I’d therefore expect us to line up something like this in the Championship
1. Elgar
2. Browne
3. Westley
4. Cox
5. Critchley
6. Walter
7. Rossington
8. Harmer
9. Snater
10. Cook
11. Porter

With Browne and Snater’s places up for grabs pre-season. Not sure if there’s budget for one more signing if Cook is replaced by an overseas player.

Our batting lineup looks even more fragile without Sir Ali. What a player he was.
I think Elgar has a decent chance of being an upgrade on 2023 Cook. It’s the other opening spot and number 4 that concerns me. Maybe Walter to open and Khushi to come in lower down? Cox has talent but it’s a big ask to expect him to come in and put up numbers like Westley and Critchley. I’d rather see Cox with the gloves but they seem to like Rossington.

I missed the bit about Elgar, a decent replacement indeed. It is a shame Rymell didn't kick on I really liked the look of him the year before last. Buttleman too.

I see John Simpson has joined Sussex. Think we went for the wrong Middlesex keeper. Really rate Simpson.

I can only assume Surrey have requested not to play Essex on a week night. Been years since we've had a T20 there between Weds-Fri. Frustrating.

Matt Critchley has signed a new deal until 2027.

If you’re quick new signing Jordan Cox is currently batting on sky at the moment in the IPL.

1st day of the new season, and we're away at Notts.

Lost the toss, and were put into bat.

Currently 125-2 (Elgar 61*, Cox 32*)

174-4 at tea. Good starts to their Essex careers for Elgar and Cox. Those two will need to carry the Essex batting this year.
