Chesterfield have a slight edge in head-to-head league matches, winning 24 to our 19, with 12 draws. However, we have come out better on the previous 4 occasions we’ve drawn them in the Cup, winning 3 times, twice after replays. In fact, the only time we’ve lost to them was the one occasion we were drawn at home!

Tomorrow’s match will be refereed by the inexperienced, at this level, Scott Simpson, who is in his early 30s and a Sales Manager from Stoke. He has a degree in Sports Coach and Exercise Science and is in his second season at National League level having done just 18 matches producing a decidedly average 57 yellows and 2 reds, one each in his last two matches.

He has not refereed Southend before but did take charge of Chesterfield’s home win over Eastleigh last season and their home win over Wealdstone this season. This will be his first ever match as referee in the FA Cup proper.

Assistants are a brace of brummies: Steve Durnall who performed a similar role in our miserable home defeat to Aldershot and Scott Chalkley. Gareth Thomas from Sheffield will be standing by as Fourth Official.
