The FA has played down reports that Chelsea may lead a breakaway from the FA Premier League and the Football Association itself. The fear of such a radical change to the national set-up was in reaction to comments from Chelsea's business affairs director Paul Smith, who said that "we're seeing an inevitable drift towards the power of the clubs. We're seeing an orientation towards clubs' brands rather than national associations or teams."

The FA has responded by playing down the fears. "We are very surprised at this story as we have not received any indication that such initiatives may be under discussion," said an FA spokesman. "We have received assurances from the Premier League that this story does not represent their position."

The question is : if the big clubs took take away the ball and go play in their own back yard, will the FA therefore prevent players who represent those non-FA clubs from representing England? After all, 'England FC' is an FA representative team ...

Surely the short answer to that is "No"... after all, the man whom the FA selected as manager has chosen as captain of England a player who does not currently play for one of the FA's representative sides, does he...?
