No previous matches with Bromley to recount, of course …. but we do have a surprisingly good recent Boxing Day record (helped by not playing on the last two Boxing Days!). Our last defeat was in 2009 at home to Colchester (when Wordsworth scored and John White was in defence for them) and since then we’ve had 8 wins and a draw.

This year’s televised late kick-off, assuming it goes ahead, is due to be refereed by Lewis Smith from Wigan. He is in the third season as a National League referee and has been a model of consistency - his first season saw 54 yellows and 2 reds from 16 games; his second saw 55 yellows and 3 reds from 16 games; this season he’s on track for something similar with 29 yellows and 1 red from 9 games.

He is employed by Lancashire County FA as Football Services Officer and is responsible for the recruitment, retention and development of all referees across Lancashire at both grassroots and elite levels. He is a keen Wigan Athletic supporter.

He took charge of one of the play-off matches last season meaning he was almost certainly near the top of the merit table for the National League and quite possibly missed out on a chance of promotion due to the selection of an official widely rumoured to be outside of the top echelon. She has only done 5 Football League matches all season.

He was Fourth Official for our Friday night draw at Tranmere a couple of years back and this season he took charge of our first home match in the National League, coincidentally also televised, against Stockport. A 0-1 defeat and 5 yellow cards – our two were Ralph and Agogo. I’m not sure the referee impressed too many people that day but given some that have followed, his performance might be viewed in a slightly more favourable light.

He has refereed Bromley thrice before at this level – their draw at Stockport this season and last season’s defeats at Hartlepool and at home to Torquay.

Assisting will be Robert Evans from Northampton who refereed our FA Youth Cup tie at Barton Rovers 6 years ago and Steve Durnall who carried out a similar role assisting at Chesterfield in the Cup and our wretched home performance against Aldershot. Fourth Official is Richie Watkins from Nuneaton.

Season’s Greetings to All.
