Films you've watched recently.

I watched the making of Bridge over the River Kwai the other day.

Laurence Olivier and then Carry grant both turned down the role.
Brillant film , but an absolute travesty of the way the British colonel (Phil Toosey) is portrayed.
Survivors of the railway boycotted the film and were incensed with his portrayal. He acted in a manner designed to build the bridge as slowly as possible BUT first and foremost to keep his men alive

The book was a fictional story as were the characters by some French author. It was never meant to portray Lieutenant Colonel Toosey. Though many have claimed it to be anti British.

Like many a shrimper (including Peter Taylor) my first job was at Lentern Aircraft. There was an old boy named Tom who worked there. He had been a guest of the Japanese for 4 years and had survived the Burma railway. he worked on a bridge but not the one over the Kwai.

He told me the Japs were rushing to finish it, so they did sabotage it. The monsoons came early and washed the whole bridge away. The guards gave the cheering prisoners good beating but he said it was worth it.

Alec Guinness joined the Navy in the war and commanded one of the boats in the Scilly landings.

Knives Out - Released on DVD etc a couple of weeks ago.

Daniel Craig stars as an investigator brought in to find out whether the death of an elderly crime writer (Christopher Plummer) was suicide or murder.

There some comic moments from the ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis and Don Johnson.

An enjoyable film, well worth a watch, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end.

And this is the problem,It was based on Pierre Boulle’s book , but the inspiration for Alex Guiness’s character was Toosey
Guiness even apologised to the Toosey family !
Both the above points are well documented.

Mary and The Witches Flower - Anime tale about a girl called Mary and a flower that's a bit witchy. Bit slow but it picks up 7/10. On Film4 earlier so possibly on More4.

The Healer - Netflix. A handyman who has hit rock bottom agrees to live with a distant uncle, who insists that his ability to fix things extends beyond the repair shop. Great under stated film that had us in hysterics at times and thoughtful at the same time. Well worth a watch 8/10.
