Southend United narrowly missed out on a place in the top six last year after play-off winners Millwall scored a late winner at Bristol Rovers to send the Lions into the end of season shoot out, and Shrimpers boss Phil Brown will use this summer to prepare his squad for another crack at the promotion places.
The Essex based club were extremely consistent and impressive in the league, scoring a mammoth 70 goals and conceding only 53, and Brown will feel that if this can be added to, his side will be serious contenders.
Brown has this week moved to sign winger Michael Kightly from Burnley on a free transfer, and the addition of the 31-year-old could have a significant impact on the Shrimpers destiny.
Kightly had a spell in the Championship with Burton towards the back end of last season, and his four goals in 10 starts went a long way in keeping the Brewers in the second tier for a second successive year.
Kightly had found his chances extremely limited at Turf Moor, but once he was afforded first team opportunities in Staffordshire, he massively impressed.

In League One and sure to be a first team regular, Kightly has the ability to light up Roots Hall, and could easily see him surpass the ten goal mark.
Southend have maintained the majority of their side over the course of the summer, and the quality addition of Kightly is sure to excite Shrimpers fans.
Dark horses in the league next season, Phil Brown will have his eyes on the top six.

I should imagine with the additions of Hendry, MK, Turner and the (wow player) we'd be quite well fancied to be promoted by the bookies.

Last time I looked we were about mid table. Paddy offering 22-1 on title, with most Bookies out to 25s. Now might be the time to lay. Portsmouth ridiculously priced. Not sure on what basis....

We was 22/1 when I looked weeks ago but we hadn't signed anyone at the time. Like you say, it might be worth putting a few quid on now, before we sign some more quality players.

How are we behind some of those clubs!? Honestly I think I am going to lump a few quid on promotion!

Pompey were always outright favs every season in L2... I don't see them competing for back to back promotions.

It's incredible. Even Portsmouth fans I know are incredulous. Bookies don't invest too much time under Championship so there is value and non-value to be had in equal measure.
