Nonetheless, the manner of Pompey’s defeat says infinitely more than the 2-0 scoreline at Roots Hall suggests.
The Shrimpers were poor, lacking spark and creativity, certainly a shadow of the team which reached the play-offs last term.
Andy Awford’s side were worse.
Not considerably worse, granted, but awful all the same.
For the vast majority of Saturday’s encounter, there was actually nothing between the sides. Rather worryingly.
Both teams criminally struggled to retain possession, each faltered when it came to threatening in the final third.
At times the football was hapless, on occasions it was laughable, such was the carelessness of those on display with the ball at their feet.
In terms of quality served up, the first half was a shocking and head-shaking fare, while after the break it was a marginal improvement.
Yet Southend scored, of course. That was the difference.
Scratch beneath the surface of the victory, however, and there was not too much for the Shrimpers to crow about in the Essex sunshine.

I thought it was a good game, but no we didnt exactly play well, but we won and thats all that matters after a poor run.

5 game winless streak ended and confidence boosted, that's all that matters.

History will not record the report in Chichester Observer. It will just say Southend United 2- 0 Portsmouth.

Well they were hardly going to say that they deserved to win are they?

Spot on for me. Both sides were poor, we were solid defensively, got a relatively fortunate goal and then scored a tidy second on the counter.

Can play better! Clean sheet, 3pts and boosted confidence not a bad thing!
Any team that thinks they can walk this division are clearly deluded!. Win ugly and I for won will Crow! as long as it's not every week.

Cannot argue with that - the first half was appalling - though three points are three points (thanks Pompey)
