Can't link to it online but if anyone fancies buying a copy they can see what my weekend was like. The headline is "Girl Lucky to be alive after booze dare."

Basically my partners eldest daughter, 16, was nominated in the facebook Neknominate thing to drink a pint of Vodka and stupidly did.

If you are parents, be aware of this ridiculous craze. 5 people have died already and it was nearly 6.

Seen plenty of harsh ********s talking about "Darwin Awards" and "Natural Selection", but teenagers are easily influenced and are desperate to be "cool". Hopefully she's found out the hard way about alcohol excess but fortunately still around to laugh about her stupidity in a few years.

We all did stupid things as kids.

Hope she is ok. When you are that age you get told that drugs and alcohol are bad so many times that it loses its affect. Only when you push the limits too much that you eventually see the true consequences. Like MK said, we've all done silly things.

Thankfully this trend will end soon and the sooner the better.

Firstly as said wishing her well.
Can someone with technical knowledge tell me why Facebook, or any social media site stop this sort of thing.
Is it not possible to enforce some sort of ban for anyone posting such a nomination?

Why does Facebook - or any social networking platform for that matter - need to go out of its way to "ban" something like this? The likes of Facebook and Twitter are no more accountable for this sort of behaviour than Ford and Honda are for every idiot that jumps behind a wheel of one of their cars drunk.

I thought Clive Martin did a great job of looking into the craze for Vice here - http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/neknominations-are-the-last-subculture - it by no means validates or glorifies it, but goes a long way to perhaps investigate why someone would engage in such behaviour. It's not because Facebook enables it, but because social media interaction is what a large swathe of society has as a means of interaction with one another and these trends or crazes place pressure on those people to conform to consensus.

Yes, ESB, it's not facebooks fault. Teenagers have been daring each other to do stupid stuff since the dawn of time; all facebook and twitter seem to do is take it away from the immediate peer group in the playground/college/youth club and turn it into something national and international, spreading it rapidly and promising a little bit of facebook fame for the participants.

In todays world, many young people wat6ch the endless stream of stupid reality shows and want to be famous for nothing more than being famous. At least in the past it was localised, now it goes viral.

However, it's her own stupidity, she is physically ok, who knows whether a lesson or two has been learned?

Not taking away from the dangers of NekNominate, but how many teens would die in a similar period normally from booze?

I look back and some of the things I did as a beered up youngster, only by the grace of God, didn't get me killed...

As I'm having a stat-dastic day, here's a graph of deaths from alcohol for age group 15-34. Since 91, deaths have risen (due to alcohol becoming cheaper?), but was dropping again. However how this NekNominate bollox will affect the figures I have no idea.

Unfortunately it seems kids/teenagers and young adults will always drink to excess and a small minority will die because of it.

Data taken from the ONS.

Yet that graph is now showing a downward trend its lowest level for years?!?!

The Echo comments section has to one of the most ignorant, bigoted forums in the world.

Thats newspaper forums in general.

Pondlife of the lowest order spend their time sniping at every news article that comes out. Pathetic really.

To set a bloody example ! Kids won't listen to adults, never have, never will

Jeez when I was a kid finding a jazzmag in the park was the highlight of the year. Now you have wall to wall porn which no amount of blockers will censor, snapchat or paedo paradise. It's an easy cop out to say why should Facebook ban it. I despair of the society the next generation grow up in with Social media, which is actually antisocial. We have just about erased ethical codes and morals.

Sorry this is about as disjointed as I've ever posted on here. It makes my fkking blood boil and I'm not constructive with my thoughts. I might try again later.

Glad the child is ok and maybe learned a lesson. My 15 yo daughter got paraletic at a kids party, the adults supervising said not their responsibility. Maybe not legally. Perhaps I'm just old fashioned and should just accept what I see going on?

How is it not their fault? If they're "supervising" then they have a responsibility to the kids there, surely?!

It's an even easier cop out to apportion blame for something like this to a social networking site and claim that banning something of this nature would help set an example. That doesn't solve anything, it just skirts around the real issue of alcohol awareness.

Eh? Alcohol isn't becoming cheaper. It's about 50% more expensive than it was 15 years ago, even allowing for inflation.
