The referee for tomorrow evening's match was to have been the quite highly rated James Linington from the Isle of Wight, but it will now be a first year referee Brendan Malone from Salisbury making his Roots Hall debut.

This will be his second Southend match, having previously refereed the abandoned match at Cheltenham and the rather more successful re-arranged fixture back in December. He cautioned Barry Corr for time wasting right at the end.

His card count is a decidedly average 60 yellows and 4 reds from 20 matches.

He will be assisted by Elliott Kaye, a Jewish official from Hainault (he was the 4th official involved in the Charlton v Colchester goal disallowed/allowed/disallowed fiasco recently) and John Magill a small and somewhat insignificant man from a small and somewhat insignificant town towards the north of the county.

Completing the trio of Essex assistants, one-time paying customer at Roots Hall, Rob Whitton, once again makes the short journey from Chelmsford to carry out 4th Official duties.
