By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

ON LOAN Southend United defender James Golding has returned to his parent club Oxford United for treatment on a groin problem.

Golding has missed the Shrimpers last two matches and has now gone back to the Championship club to be assessed.

Blues boss Kevin Maher confirmed: "James has had a scan and we're waiting on that.

"He will be going back to Oxford on Monday to be assessed there.

"Hopefully we'll get news on that soon.

Golding has made 15 appearances for the Shrimpers, scoring three goals.

One wonders if him being injured gives us a better chance of signing him in the summer. I think he is out of contract and it may put other clubs off if he is injured. We my just take the gamble as we know the player better and he knows the club.

I suspect we’ll have a go, but whether we value him the same as Oxford is another matter.

I wouldn’t say no chance….

I understand there remains a small chance, and I think he'd like the move.

Some in the club saw his ability and potential, and championed his value as a permanent signing, as soon as he first trained with us. By the time others inside the club got it, he'd put in some excellent performances for us and Oxford had also realised what they have. So I'm not sure he's going to be quite as easy (cheap?) to get permanently as he would have been had we moved early like some wanted.

We'll see. Could go either way.

Haven't some alluded to off-field issues, or is this conjecture and hearsay.

Hadn't realised Oxford United play in the Championship now. Not sure he is near that level but I believe he could have the potential for League 2 / League 1.

Think we would do well to get him in if we could especially if Oxford decide to cash in on him to other clubs within the EFL

There may be a small chance of a transfer or long term loan if Oxford manage to stay in the Championship. If they are relegated I would have thought they would retain him.
