Mixed news from a macro and micro perspective:

Inflation is now at its highest for 2 years at 3.8%
People claiming unemployment benefit rose sharply in January

However at work, we are exceeding our targets for the year.

How's your work situation?

employed, got my fixed term contract extended for another 2 years. Hopefully going to get a Fellowship before all the health research money dries up.

We're one of the few department in the uni continuing to expand...

Fantastic, all going well, company always expanding and servicing new fund manangement companies needs. Seems people are investing more in ISA'a Pep's etc rather than spending.

May not be great for the economy, but great for me and my employers.

I have noticed pubs are much emptier than before the recession.

This obviously impacts people like me that go from pub to pub looking for fruit machines ready to cough and the fights that invariably follow a decent payout

8 refineries in the UK, 2 for sale, India and China building the best refineries on the planet. Cheaper to import than to manufacture here. Work it out!
