Post-Match Thread and Ratings Grimsby Town 0-0 Southend United

The alternative would be to let them kick us off the park and leave us short of players for the important 3 home games......That embarrassing excuse of a ref was never going to protect our players so well done JW and Macca. At least their actions made Grimsby think twice.

That one on the far side against ANG would have been no complaints from Nobby Stiles. Plus lifting sneaky studs up etc. I doubt Olay will be playing Tuesday and that was definitely the time for a card. Ref can have no complaints about our complaints.

If I was the Arsenal U23 manager I probably wouldn’t want my players getting kicked to bits in this league.

The ref was awful - gave the impression he didn’t want to be there.
23 fouls Grimsby committed and those were just the ones he gave. If that’s not persistent fouling what is? However only two bookings for them and three for us.

Persistent fouling is only a booking if is the same player I believe.

As for our bookings, 2 were for dissent. I love Macca but if I was a ref I’d book him before he was even on the pitch.

A point away I will always take, seems like we just don’t want to loose matches rather than to try and win them, we need a proper number 9 with Akinola behind in the number 10 position, have a lot of balls into the box but no one on the end of any of them. Next three matches are vital.

Well Hewitt made about 5 fouls. 2 of which deserved a booking in isolation. Seems pretty persistent to me, at least for him. Didn’t really notice any others persistently fouling.

Fair enough, didn’t notice it myself. I’m not saying ref was great, just didn’t think he was that bad.

All that it is bad about League 2 football was on show today and not just at Grimsby. Grimsby were abysmal - kicking us off the park.
Oxley had one shot to deal with - in the first half from 25 yards straight at him. We still don’t have a cutting edge as their keeper had just one save to make right at the end when he showed great anticipation.

We couldn’t afford to lose and didn’t however anyone thinking our current form is promotion form is deluded.

This standard in this division is appalling. Between them the 18 sides playing today managed 11 goal and two of them were own goals managing just 59 shots on target in total. That’s an average of three shots each. Goalkeepers have such an easy life these days.

20 goal striker - as rare as a penny black. Has anyone seen a player under 30 in any side that has impressed them/ excited them this season and produced the goods. The only one I can remember is Wilkinson at Orient

The pitches aren’t going to get any drier either for a few weeks.
Its going to be a long old slog.

I agree that this league is absolutely awful, with very little between any of the teams. Although it means that most of the games are difficult to actually enjoy beyond wanting Southend to win, it does give some encouragement that next season there is genuinely no reason we shouldn't be looking at promotion- should we stay up this season. I don't think that's rose tinted, I just think this is a terrible division.

Got to be honest, i took a lot of positives from that game. I was a bit surprised that it wasnt called off, seeing the state of that pitch, and totally get why we were set up to not lose - 3 huge home games over the next 2 weeks, starting with Cambridge on tuesday, so MM was not going to risk KT or anyone coming on unnecessarily today, particularly after the injury to Olayinka.

We arent out of the woods, and think we will still be scrapping our way through the rest if this season. We are in a decent position as teams around us are dropping points, so it is a shame we couldnt secure the win, but with the table concertina'ing now and we are the in-form side, we are more likely to start climbing the table than the teams around us. But, given we are disappointed at a point, a clean sheet and at a place we have always struggled, it shows how far we have come in the last few weeks. The ref was awful, and conditions not great, and we should have converted those early chances, but there are now obvious improvement opportunities in some areas rather than in every position - at left back, which will be better when Clifford is back, midfield creativity, will be better when we arent playing on a ploughed field, and set pieces, which we just consistently messed up today and can improve on. The biggest gap now is a big, strong CF to sit alongside Sim. It is a job that Halford could do if we can keep him, but think we need a specialist as well, because neither Acqah or Richard Taylor are ready yet.

I listened to bbc essex on the radio rather than the ifollow commentary, annoying that it is out of sync - but still better than listening to the local commentary.

Overall, a great effort from grimsby to get the game on, so every credit to them, and a solid point for us away from home, where we didnt look like a team who were going to buckle first.

I Think both teams were so worried about accidently hugging each other during the goal celebrations, that they didn't actually get anywhere near the goal
Well, it is one way to make sure the powers that be can't call a halt to the season...

Don't know who they're player was, but the guy that slid in studs up on ox was a yellow for me, and had ox played on it and manufactured a slight contact, a possible red .

Who would you drop?
Would assume Olyinka may be injured/rested and give JD a break. He has done well and works hard but offers little with the ball at his feet and his set pieces today were awful. But positive is that we can have these discussions on who to pick and who to leave out. This time 2 months ago we didn't have the choices

If it was taking place in my back garden I wouldn't close the curtains I'd tell 'em all to p*ss off my property. I've spent ages getting that lawn looking decent.

It wont help if we are without Demi , during tough times, Thought he had a very good game today actually, but how many yellows is that now ? and is that the third for yet again kicking the ball away, Rather silly if we lose him for yet more petulant and unnecessary time wasting from our ex International Captain. We were on top and starting to look like a Molesley side that scores late on?

Their no7 Green persistently fouled as did no 22 Hewitt (yet neither were booked) but sadly pointing that out to Mr Toner was a bigger offence than kicking our players off the park. We started off really well, all over them, but once Olayinka was crocked after one of their 23 fouls, bringing on Macca changed our pattern into more of a containment set up. We deserved to win "on points for artistic merit" but not for clear cut chances created. However if we can continue to pick up points on pudding pitches then I'm very optimistic that we'll be OK and expect better results once the surfaces get back to half decent.
