HANNAKINS LADIES v SOUTHEND LADIES (MATCH REPORT)

SZ Reps In Attendance: “bluesbloke” and “Southminster_Shrimper”
Game played on Sunday 27th January 2008, k/o 2:00pm

A nice sunny afternoon in Billericay, with Hannakins Community Centre playing host to the game between Hannakins Ladies and Southend Utd Ladies. After a disappointing performance last weekend, we were hoping for an altogether more positive result this time out.

And to ensure his position in the crowd “Southminster_Shrimper” arrived 15 minutes early and was even given a small wave from the Blues manager as an acknowldgement of his arrival. “Bluesbloke” on the other hand was 5 minutes late.

A few minutes after “bluesbloke” arrived and a speculative shot from Hannakins clipped an out stretched SUFCL defenders leg and the ball nestled into the corner of the net. Hannakins take the lead 1-0.
Shortly after, and Hannakins bag a second. Another speculative shot from inside the area which the keeper perhaps could have done better with, crept in the corner. Score now 2-0.

After that the game seemed to settle down with chances few and far between. An surging run by an SUFCL forward resulted in a foul being committed and the rather portly ref awarded SUFCL a free kick just to the left of the goal a short distance outside the penalty area as we looked on. Was it going to be a shot or a well executed training ground move, we weren’t sure. The answer was soon provided, as the rocket of a shot flew towards the top corner only to thud the crossbar and bounce out to be cleared by Hannakins. The Southend crowd were disappointed but were really impressed with the freekick.

The rest of the first half was mostly played in the middle of the park and chances were lacking. SUFCL had a few decent crosses but alas there was no SUFCL player on the end of them.

During the half time interval, SUFCL make a tactical change. Sarah becomes an outfield player and Lucy goes in goal. I believe Lucy might have picked up a knock to her ankle during the first half which would explain the move especially as she is SUFCLs best outfield player.

Second half gets underway and again shots on goal are fairly limited really and most of the play is confined to the middle of the park once again. This helped the ref cos it meant he didn’t have to move to far and was never more than 50 feet from his picnic hamper.

A decent shot on target from Hannakins in the second half was well saved by Lucy but to be honest there wasn’t really much in the way of goal scoring opporunities.

SUFCL had an excellent opportunity to get a goal back in the latter stages of the second half. SUFCL forward was through on goal but having connected perfectly the out rushing keeper stuck out her right hand and pulled off a superb reflect save. It was an excellent save to be honest and followed it up with another block as SUFCL tried to score from the rebound. It was an unfortunate moment as if it had gone in, it could have made the last 10 mins an decent spectacle.
As it was the game didn’t have much more in the way of opportunities, with SUFCL seemingly getting frustrated with each other at times. This seems particularly evident from the twins who seem to be at each other for a lot of the time.

All in all another decent game, with SUFCL unlucky not to atleast score and perhaps on the balance of play might have felt a draw would have been a fair result. Alas it wasn’t to be.

And finally, because if I don’t mention it “bluesbloke” will, the comedy moment of the day was once again reserved for “Southminster_Shrimper” and his ball retrieval skills. This time slipping as he went to retrieve the ball from the ditch behind the goal in the second half, fortunately it was a dry ditch. And ofcourse, this met with no sympathy at all from either Lucy or “bluesbloke” who decided instead simply to take the micky as “Southminster_Shrimper” massaged his own back which was in some discomfort.

Final Score – Hannakins Ladies 2 Southend United Ladies 0
