Well, there can't be a team in the land we have a better recent record against than Hereford. Seven straight League wins, the last six (including three away matches) without conceding a goal.

Can the shambolic affairs of the summer mean that we can no longer rely on beating even Hereford? Probably.

Or is there another factor? Saturday's referee will be Karl Evans from Manchester. We have failed to get a single point from the three games he has done before. In fairness, I'm not sure any were his fault.

He is in his fourth season and has refereed Southend three times before - away at Bristol Rovers(L 4-2) the season before last (just one yellow there) and also away at Swindon (L 3-0) for Tilly's 300th match (three yellows for us). Then, most recently, last season at Millwall (L2-0) with three yellows apiece (Macca, Grant and Malone for us).

He is a sales rep, which is why he does so many games in the south of the country.

His statistics for the season are 5 matches, 8 yellows and 1 red. Pretty average.

Assisting will be Rob Merchant from Stockton Brook in Staffordshire and Tim Wood from Quedgeley in Gloucester. Tony Horton from Wolverhampton travels across the Black Country to hold up the numbers board.
