The referee for Saturday's big match is Lee Mason from Bolton (which is, of course, in Greater Manchester as Brendan Rodgers reminds everyone each time he referees Liverpool v a Manchester team - well not each time actually - only when Liverpool lose!).

A Select Group referee since 2006, he is a former chairman of the Bolton Referees' Society. His younger brother Andy is a former professional footballer who played briefly for Bolton Wanderers but mainly for ................ Hull, scoring 4 goals in the late 90s.

He received extended coverage on TV last night when the League Cup semi-final went to extra-time and penalties. Here he is in action colliding with a player from each team - very even handed.

The fact that he was the only one of the three to stay on his feet is testimony not to his great physical strength, but to the pathetic fragility of Premiership players.

Like most Select Group officials he gets plenty of TV coverage. He has a few very good games a few very bad games and a load somewhere in between. Not a personal favourite of mine, he has an unfortunate appearance and manner suggesting arrogance.

He has refereed Southend 6 times before, all away from home:

2003/4 our 2-1 win at Carlisle
2004/5 our 2-1 defeat at Oxford at the 0-0 at Northampton (playoff)
2005/6 our 3-0 win at Colchester (3 early goals, no cards unusually for him ...... and that fixture)
2006/7 our 4-0 defeat at Hull
2009/10 our 3-1 defeat at MK Dons

... so two wins and a draw not too bad from 6 away games.

He has shown 73 yellows from 21 games this season with 3 reds (two of which were West Ham players).

He will be assisted by non Select Group assistants. Harry Lennard from Peacehaven and Constantine Hatzidakis from Bromley as some of you will remember, the bald and somewhat over-active lino to our left at Wycombe this season.

Fourth official is diminutive Football League referee, Andy Woolmer from Northampton.

PS other Refwatches are available

there may be other ref watches available but they're all inferior copies...........

He was referring the Man U v Sunderland match last night and seemed to let a lot go. Seems to miss a lot of fouls and he didn't indicate that he was playing advantage. Don't know if this is good or bad for us.

The normally decent Dean Whitestone at Daggers on Tuesday.

More about that when the Cup's out of the way (hopefully, temporarily) !
