We did give you a football lesson this time round, don't know what has happened to them this season as it is the same team that could not string two wins in a row last term. gower was your man of the match he never gave up and looked pretty good. wish you well for the season hope you go up.

here is the report from our site.

Mike Newell was forced to make one change from the side which has won the Hatters' last two games at home to Wrexham and Bradford City. Charlton Athletic wouldn't give permission for loan goalkeeper Simon Royce to feature and so Slovenian Dino Seremet made his return to the Luton starting eleven.

Luton started brightly and took the lead after just eleven minutes. Ahmet Brkovic's shot from Paul Underwood's deflected cross was blocked and the rebound looped up across goal. Steve Howard came in at the far post to sidefoot the ball home. Southend keeper Bart Griemink got a hand to it but couldn't keeper it out.

Just three minutes later and Steve Howard made it 2-0 with his tenth goal of the season and an excellent finish. Stephen O'Leary found Rowan Vine and he squared for Howard to fire the ball past Bart Griemink from 14 yards out.

Just after the half hour mark and the Hatters were 3-0 up. Rowan Vine played through Ahmet Brkovic and the Croatian danced around the Southend keeper before taking his time to coolly slot the ball into the back of the net.

In the 53rd minute, Ahmet Brkovic came close to netting a second. His looping header from Paul Underwood's cross went just wide.

Dino Seremet got more confident as the match went on and made some excellent stops from the likes of Freddy Eastwood and Mark Gower. Seremet did still look slightly uncomfortable with crosses. In the 64th minute, the Slovenian dropped Lewis Hunt's corner and Chris Coyne had to be on his feet to clear an Adam Barrett effort off the line.

Southend came into the game more as Luton eased off with the game already won. Mark Gower fired just wide in the 75th minute and then Adam Barnett put a header straight at Dino Seremet with eight minutes left on the clock. The Hatters held on for a clean sheet.

Luton boss Mike Newell told LutonTown.co.uk after, "We are pleased to get through. It was a professional performance, we competed in the first half and we got the goals then in the second half we defended well when we had to."

"We won the first ball all over the pitch in the first half. Southend is not an easy place to come, they had won six games on the bounce in the league and it was a good result. It would have asked a lot of them to perform in the second half, as they had done in the first but they did well overall.

"People will have seen from our first half performance why we are where we are in the league and you could not fault anyone, they had won the game by half-time."

The Second Round Draw tales place live on BBC ONE on Sunday at around 4pm after their live game. Luton Town are ball number seven in the draw. Newell added, "Ideally we would like a home tie in the next round but we are pleased just to be there."

Fair play to you. We lost to a better side and we can't moan about the result.

Pretty much fair. Not a lot to argue about.

IMO, it was a pretty even game separated by almost a gulf in quality in the final third. Disappointed with our defence but certainly Vine looked excellent and Howard's always gonna cause anyone under 8 foot problems. Think it was a bit harsh on the keeper though. He read all of our 8 corners like a book and only spilled once under pressure.

Disappointingly, not really a contest but then, we are aspiring to stay in the division you are championing. QPR was a dreamland result and we would have been spoiled if we got the same. Good luck. The better you are if and when you go up, the better it looks on us

you played better than huddersfield when the came to the kennel, they had two shots on goal all game and they both went in and they beat us 2-1.
you looked good second half maybe becuase we backed off but you could see a few players with talent.

can't believe you've made enough posts to get to reserve team. I almost feel embarassed with my total now.

I agree with the first point.

I wish I could agree with the second!

Whilst various people have commended Maher and Hunt's performances, Luton dominated the first half by being first to the loose ball in midfield. You don't expect the 2nd division side to be stronger and more committed than the 1st division side, but all credit to Luton as they won they ball and then were able to use it well and did to us what we've been doing to 2nd division teams.

You could see why Luton have been doing well and its no disgrace to lose to them, although it was disappointing, especially as the game was over after 15 minutes.

i thought we came up against a good team friday night. light years in front of col ewe thats for sure. poxy amount of luton fans there though

The number of Luton fans is down to newell hinting that he would try a few youngsters out, so most luton fans expecting the second team playing friday but he only changed the keeper.

Luton- 6 points clear, League 0ne & struggled to bring 500 fans 60 odd miles. Surely have got a much better team than the support it seems to attract. Just a small team near Watford-perhaps?

This has been mentioned elsewhere but Luton fans were boycotting the game. Something to do with sky.

Is that the best you can come up with!

Just seen this thread for the first time & would like to give credit to Luton Town as they'd certainly done their homework well & realised we have 2 centre backs who are much better in the air. Therefore, they told their players to keep the ball on the floor when attacking our box - and it worked.

Our first half performance wasn't at all good, imho, but Luton didn't really give us a sniff. Second half though was much better but it was too late by then - Luton had done most of the job they came to do.

Don't forget, though, they are top of League 1 & have been running away with it to some extent. Also, for them, a few eeks ago, to come back form 3 stratight defeats, after such a great start, then beat the 2nd placed team 4-0 & then Wrexham 5-1 certainly shows some "steel".

We just came up against a better side than us on Friday night.

Perhaps the rest of them were called to prayer....

As you would have seen if you could be bothered to look at the various banners being displayed at the front of the North Bank.

Fair play WindyBottom, the better team won on the night Good luck in the cup. Looks like it's going to be an exciting season for the Hatters this year.
