Legendary footballer JC has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Though, no surprise as he was (is?) a chain smoker.

Probably my all time favourite player, remember watching Holland at the peak of his playing career and being mesmerised. Terribly sad news.

Got Johan Cryuff's autograph on Jimmy Burns' Barça:A People's Passion a few years back, via an ex- Argentinian student of mine, who used to work for Laporta and knew JC well.

Probably be worth a bit if he doesn't pull through.:winking:

What a massively inconsiderate thing to say! And as for the rest of your post every thread does not have to be about you and what you have done so give it a rest.

Really sad news, a massive influence on Dutch football and from what I've seen a great player in his day.

In the middle to late seventies I was working at Bill Garner Sports Trophies in Rochford when Bill asked me if I would like to go to see Chelsea play New York Cosmos. Ticket sales had been poor(about 10,000 sold) when the day before the match it was announced that Johan Cryuff would be guesting for the Cosmos and the attendance shot up to just under 40,000(this was their third highest that season). The match ended 1-1(I think)however after the match I was lucky enough to go to the corporate event(sponsored by Brute) with a meal/cabaret. Luckily for me the table next to ours had Cryuff,Beckenbauer,as well as a few others including Manager Eddie Firmani who I knew quite well from his time at Southend in the 60's so I was lucky enough to get many autographs. Bill left Chelsea soon after and joined Cambridge United, but that night at Stamford Bridge really was a once in a lifetime event and I still have the signed stuff to this day, and the memories to go with it.

Heard Graham Hunter (Scottish journalist specialising in Spanish football) argue that Cruyff is the most influential figure in the history of the game.

Player - those Ajax and Netherlands sides of the 1970s
Manager - the Barcelona 'Dream Team' of the early 1990s
Influence - the structure and ethos he put in place at FCB, which truly bore fruit with the Guardiola era and indeed the great Spanish national side from 2008 to 2012

Not saying I necessarily agree but it's certainly worth pondering.

Actually, I'm a great admirer of Johan's and am sorry I arrived in Barna just too late to see him play for them (though I did see Neeskens).

You'll have noticed there was a smiley at the end of my post.It was there for a reason.

I remember reading a football magazine in the early 70s that people were saying he would be a better player than George Best , and I thought , no way .

Not sure he was either, though as I said, I never actually got to see him live.

Still think GB was the greatest player I've ever seen ,in a list that includes Pele and Maradona among others.
